Around the League Thread | The Conference Finals Begin!

It’s because they won’t acquire, and keep, elite talent and don’t believe in paying for goaltending. Their high shot volume strategy also inflates some of their advanced stats but the lack of elite forward talent and inability to rely on goaltending against great teams are far bigger problems.
Normal basic stats since Rod took over 7th in GF, 2nd in GA, 12th in PP, 1st in PK. That has led them to the 3rd best record since 18-19.

I tend to think in the back half of the playoffs it backfires a bit. Don't get me wrong in very basic terms if you want to score more then put more pucks on net. The issue is when you get deep in the playoffs the teams tend to be very good at defense. If you rely almost completely on shot volume like the Canes it can become a problem when you come up against a team that simply won't allow that shot volume.

That said, the Canes clearly recognized this and tried to address it (Rantanen). But they made a huge mess of that. I have to think if they go out in yet another somewhat embarrassing fashion there will be a reset in Carolina. They are the definition of a team not being able to get over the hump.

So the cap is going to massively “rise”?????

Yet the NHL can’t find a damn soul to watch the NHL playoffs in the states

Down 38% in viewership
Not shocking...No Wings. No Hawks, Wild out early, No new York teams beyond first round. The teams left in the states aren't huge TV viewership areas.

Also you never know where the damn games can be found...

They don’t routinely make it to the conference finals if they were in the west imo. The east sucks.

It's not just shot volume for Carolina though. The expected goals have been very high, so it's not as if they are just lobbing pucks from the point. They are generating goal scoring opportunities.

Carolina's rosters have exceeded expectations a bit because they have been so sound defensively and played such a team game. Reminds me of Nashville when they were good. Solid D, lacked the scoring up front.

In Carolina you have Aho who since Rod took over has scored at .95 ppg and then you have Svechnikov who scored at .75.

Rod's a bit of Tocchet in not allowing the offensive players to play offence as long as it outweighs the defensive part of their games.

i'm still a carolina believer but i think a big part of their problem is they play a playoff style game all year and that advantage evaporates the deeper they go in the playoffs

i think tocchet's success with the canucks was a similar effect

Don't cheer against Florida.

I know they're a pretty dirty and despicable team but they're also our only hope to beat the Oilers again if we get a Stanley Cup rematch.

Hopefully Dallas finally punches their ticket though. Such a deep team top to bottom.

I think there was enough fan support for the Leafs to make that move as it clearly wasn't working. Like the Canucks have won as many playoff series as the Leafs during Shanahan's tenure as Leafs POHO. How long did Shanahan and Dubas expect to have before they were run out of town?
well i did say they didn't have the guts to do it, this isn't some endorsement or support. They really should've try to trade away Tavares years back. They stripped him of his captaincy and somehow decided yeah lets keep him around even though the core4 has had a bad rep already by that time.

The bottom of the East isn't good but the top is just as good or better than what the West has to offer.

the east went 260-199-53 against the west while the west went 252-205-55 against the east. the two conferences are basically about the same

the top west teams look better because nashville, chicago and san jose were all putrid and finished 8, 15 and **24** points back of the worst east teams

Yes and no. A lot of shots hitting the net generates rebounds which increases the xGF. But it does matter how you generate those shots when it gets to this point in the season. I may be wrong as I don't regularly watch the Canes but from what I've seen they rely on counter attack and playing from the half boards and point. They aren't a get to the inside and crease type of team. And that's fine for regular season but is less effective as you move through the playoffs. Contrast that with Florida who are starting there attacking play around the goal.

There is a reason the Canes traded for a 6' 4" 230lb Moose (and honestly Taylor Hall). They just should have checked to see if Rantanen actually wanted to be there first. A massive blunder. Stankhoven while a good young player is the exact opposite of what they needed. Hall is too far past his prime but historically he has always been a hard to the net player...to the detriment of his long term health and career.

They did and apparently Rantanen and agent were saying yes to get a better contract from the Avs, and they didn't mean it lol

They do shot from the perimeter a lot. Canes dominate in rebound shots for but not at cashing them in. Medium danger shots as well, first place by 60 shots over Dallas.

Canes forwards now that Necas is gone and Rantanen didn't work out. Aho is doing a lot of lifting. Jarvis regular season .92 ppg and Svech .67 then Taylor Hall .57. 4 forwards over a half a ppg at seasons end. The Canucks had 6.

Guentzal last year and Rantanen this year they are seeing that they need some more top end talent. Keeping it seems to be difficult haha. How's their practice facility?

Turns out you shouldn't lowball pending UFAs you acquire at TDL.

I am happy the Panthers are a huge wake up call for people who think grit and size doesn't matter in the playoffs.

Our top 6 would be broken, bruised and cucked by the Panthers for 4 games.
