Around the League Thread | The Conference Finals Begin!

I feel bad for the Islanders. Finally getting rid of Lou and then they get this right after. They deserve better

...I always see fans bitching about Shanahan but has never made sense to me - he executed the vision of the rebuild pretty well, at some point the onus falls onto the players to actually not shit themselves, and specifically the GM to make the right moves. Toronto has also been one of the stronger teams at drafting recently too.

I know Lamoriello wasn't great with the cap but they went to the CF twice under his leadership and were one game away from having one of the easier finals matchups in recent memories. Shanahan also did a terrific job for his first five years in Toronto.

If we're doing a "fanbases to feel sympathetic for" ranking, I don't know if NYI is in my bottom 10.

Meyers won't waive his NMC; he's not going anywhere ... Hronek's NMC kicks on July1st, and he is a very good D man on a reasonable salary. I really think someone may come asking.

If Edm doesn't win it all this year ... and the reason is goaltending ... they may be very interested in getting both Hronek and Demko. but the price tag could be very high. Say Nugent Hopkins and Sam O'Reilly and a 2026 1st for Hronek Demko & 2025 3rd?

That would help our problems with excess goalies and the D man logjam, and get us a good centre and good centre prospect.

Edit - RNH would have to waive ....

Hronek borders on untouchable IMO, his absence would create a hole just as big as Miller's. Even with a better player than Nuge coming back I'd rather gamble on Pettersson bouncing back and trying to find value elsewhere for the 2C than cratering our right side D.

Leafs brought in Shanahan the same month and year that we brought in Jim ****ing Benning where they had two (intentionally) poor years, grabbed Matthews/Marner/Nylander followed by 9 straight years in the playoffs including 7-100+ point seasons. I'd say Shanahan was a pretty big success in that regard—it is hard to put up a good team for that many years in a row, could just never get over the hump like those Ovi-teams.

I think I puked a bit in my mouth reading that. Gross

they also don't have their 2026 first and I'd be disinclined to do that organization any real favours.

There is no logjam on defense until Mancini or Willander is playing at a higher level than either Myers or Hronek, and it would be insane to assume that is going to happen quickly (if ever).

Look like you're just creating a hole on the back end to fill one at C and in net (Silvos is nowhere close to Demko)

Trading Hronek and Demko to Edmonton would end my interest in hockey.

Kinda crazy for Canada to get bounced by the Danes... this roster looked a lot better than the 2023 one, which won the tournament. Good for Denmark though, they have a real shot at making it to the finals.

Canada sucked. They should have blown the Danish team apart based on the rosters. I'm not upset the Danes won, a historic win for them, and will help build hockey there. I'm disappointed in our teams effort, very poor.
One side played like a cohesive team, were ultra aggressive and were constantly winning puck battles at both ends.

The other side played like total jackasses. Selfish solo dashes, overpassing and trying to get clean looks at net. Nathan MacKinnon is a phenominal talent but he's proven to be incredibly stupid and selfish with the puck at times.

There is a major reason why talented teams flame out at these tournaments. Too many egos.

I feel a big part of it is Canadian players don't take this tournament as seriously as others. Like you say, they just rely on talent. You see them dig in for the Olympics and best on best but this just feels like a overseas hockey holiday.

I think the issue is the vision. The rebuild was executed. Kudos. The team then transitioned to win now mode with Dubas and Keefe (who were both rookies at their job at the time). I think the fan frustration is essentially sticking with the same script. At some point the onus is on management to make changes when the same players you rely on to win fail you year after year.

The Leafs' D is considered the best defense the Leafs have had since Shanahan took over. The best goaltender after Andersen left? Jack Campbell? Stolarz?

Very mid hire. But then again, no one was hyped for Arniel in Winnipeg either.
For Davidson, this hire has to work. Not sure he’s going to be able to fire Blashill and remain GM. But that roster is going to turn over a bunch of players to insert some prospects. Need to add good players to help them. In 2 seasons Chicago can’t imo be bottom 10.
