why did the avs trade rantanen? next contract going to be too big? i thought he was going to be nate mackinnons bum buddy for life
Pure speculation on my part, no sources, my guess is with the cap going up Rant wanted more than MacKinnon and Sakic didn't feel they'd be able to get it done. Looks like Carolina's offer is similar to what was offered for Petey last year, so they've been hunting a deal like this for awhile.

Rumors on the Nazi site about canucks getting Necas through Colorado, for Miller. But it's all chatter so far.

it's at the point where being a normal writer is the exception to the rule. i think maybe only jonathan willis counts in this case.

jim matheson, bob stauffer, mark spector, terry jones, david staples... all of them have parasocial relationships to the players

Don't forget Dan Tencer, who apparently has moved on from media but is still an insufferable bellend.

Taylor Hall trade reminds me how woeful it's been for Bedard in the last 2 years. His destined sidekick's tenure consisted of being injured and then being ass/traded in consecutive seasons.

At least he's still got Mikheyev to help him get by before coming home.

Start the rebuild now and it'll ready just in time

Probably $13m+ and bigger than MacKinnon's.

I think it was reported that Avs tried to extend Ratanen but he wants a f*** ton of money, think Draisaitl money and the Avs won’t be able to ice a competitive team if they give that to Ratanen.

They can.

They can move the pieces around, they just choose not to.

It's only 3.75 more to extend Rantanen to 13m.

True, maybe they just don’t want to have anyone earn more than Mack. We’ll also find out soon how much he really wanted.
Mack had his chance to reset the NHL salary market. He opted to just go $100K higher than McDavid. Quickly surpassed by Matthews and then Leon. If he took his deal thinking it would lead to keeping the group together, he can't be happy to see Rantanen getting traded. You either have to know your teammates well enough that they all want to stay and are willing to take a bit less, or you yourself have to be content and let management know that you are fine not being the top paid player on the roster when your teammates are due up for a new deal.

Rantanen only had a 9 team no trade list. Curious to see if he hits the market or does sign in Carolina. Massive difference for him in total money in getting that 8th year.

They really need to drop the contract max term to 5 years and make UFA a year earlier in exchange. That would kill off a lot of tanking (not all of it) and create a lot more action in the trade market.

Right now the pain of losing a trade is way bigger than winning, team control is way too big of a factor in being competitive, and bad long term contracts have too high of downside for an orgs competitiveness.

Yeah they are going to do a bunch to make it up to Mack.

Realistically, based on age, it's the Avs window right now. Mack turns 30 in 2025. Side turned 30 in 2017, the Pens last cup. Avs should have been a top contender the past 2 seasons and the next 3. But, they did get their cup. But, they don't look to have a TB/Chi type of run of multiple championships/finals in a window of 6 years or so.

That seems like fantasy. Doubly so since Necas is playing tonight.
Yeah... i guess you're right.

Anyone got a link to Myers' press conference?

Exactly why they won't be trading for Miller lol

I remember at the start of the season, about 12 games in how some folks here were commenting on how teams like Columbus (Pitt, Detroit, Ottawa) should just pack it in and trade all their players for futures. I found it a silly notion then and this is why. Obvious in a hockey chat forum lol but not in real life.

Massive oversight by the Avs if MacKinnon had no inkling a Rantanen trade could happen.
That’s one key part about a player taking a discount. Do you do what NJ/Det did and use that player as your cap and structure everyone else under that? And when you encounter a player who does wish to use the market then you have to decide.

That appears what happened to the Avs.
