The Meier trade is looking great for them. Zetterlund has more points than Meier, and is a +8 on a mostly negative team. Also got Musty with the first, and Muhamadullin. They also used the 2nd to move up 3 spots in the 2024 draft and got Dickinson. Not having to pay that contract might be the biggest win.
I also want to thank Eklund for making me want him 1st overall in the 2021 draft not look so bad now. What a weak draft though. Wyatt Johnston looked like he would go first in a redraft last year but now it is probably Guenther( Thanks Benning)

Not sure how to quote from locked up threads but there was a post along the lines of "SJS wont have an issue signing free agents" which is also another big advantage for them in their rebuild by nature of just having the California factor and being able to live in the Bay Area.
SJS has all of their bad money expiring by the end of the Smith/Celebrini ELCs, and all of their retention money except 1.3MM for Hertl for a few years beyond those ELC expirations. Pretty much a fully clean slate.
I expect them to go big game hunting in free agency some time in the next 2-3 years if the positive momentum of the team is sustained (in reality there will be lots of ups and downs).

I don't know, California taxes are pretty high. That's a big factor for FA's looking to maximize their earning potentials in the later stages of their careers.

No, that's the point. You see teams getting absolutely destroyed because of their goaltending and you wonder why they accept this.
With any rebuilding team, I think they need to show FA that they have turned the corner. Such as finishing with around 80 points as the WC cutoff is typically in around 93. So if you are around a dozen points out then you are realistically close.
But even in the 2000’s, SJ and Ana were trading for Thornton, EK, Burns, Kesler, Bieksa, etc not signing them. Guys have been willing to waive to go there when the clubs were good.
IMO Chicago despite the rumours were never close to getting Gruentzal. Not with a 60 or so point season. Not making up 30 points needed to make PO. Guys who have options want to be in the playoffs. Not sure many would want to wait 2-3 more years for the club to make it. Who knows how they will be playing by then.

Very very gross, one of the refs is literally staring at the play and Cuylle's stick clearly gets caught in Armia's skates. Wasn't even subtle. The trip meant Habs couldn't clear the puck and Kakko was wide open due to Armia needing to get up and skate back.

The problem of big game hunting in FA is that it's kinda like being the alpha male at the bar at 2 am.

No he doesn't Power, Johnston and Clarke are clearly more valuable and go ahead of him. He is in that next group even then is he top 10 probably but I would not say clear cut. Talking about the 2021 draft Ryker Evans is playing really well for the Kraken.
