McDavid leaving the Oilers is a fun fantasy but there's a reason that they hired his agent to run the team.

This is McDavid's team. The only real question is how much he extends for. If it's a penny less than 20% of the cap, he's done them a huge favour.
Based on the projection, the cap will be like $94/95 mill. So, talking around $19 mill vs the cap before it really jacks up (expectation). He could have had $15 mill on his current deal but took 1/6 less at $12.5 mill.

But, with the expected increase in the cap the high end will soon be $20 mill plus.

At some point he's going to really care about his legacy. The thoughts will come slowly and then all at once. Crosby won his second cup when he was 28. McDavid has none, and the team around him is horribly constructed with little in the pipeline and one other core piece...two if you count Bouchard. If they get bounced out of the playoffs early, the doubt is going to start to creep in and then the finger pointing will start.

But the flip side is Ovie won his first at what 33? Sometimes players don't see the forest for the trees. Its why many if not most would and do make terrible GM's

Here is an article celebrating Ovechkin's commitment to donate under ten thousand dollars to pediatric cancer research. Stunning.

TB loading up again. With Gourde and Bjorkstrand in the fold...they are terrifying.

Yeesh. The Atlantic bracket is absolutely brutal. A FLA-TB series should probably be the ECF, not round 1.
Nice deal for Seattle. Couple of firsts (2026 and 2027) and Toronto's 2nd this year for two 40ish point players. One who will be 30 next month with another year at $5+ mil and one who will be 34 in December and is a pending UFA. They also get back a serviceable pending UFA in Eyssimont but that seems like contract/cap stuff. It's not important to the trade.

Makes sense for the Lightning as well. Some good competent depth up front for a deep run.

Honestly that indicates a really nice market for someone like Pius Suter.

What a sellers market. Wow. Good deal for both teams. Tampa is here to win, not collect picks and prospects to potentially win years down the line.

Florida is nice, especially after acquiring Seth Jones but gotta think Tampa is the favorites to come out of the east after trading for Gourde and Bjork.

Good time to be a seller.

Wonder if any GM in particular will take the hint.

TB pays the price to, in my mind, become co-East favourites with FLA.

I had TB as a darkhorse pre-season. I think they're scary good now with Gourde and Bjorkstrand in the fold.

It's a shame that TB-FLA can't be the ECF.

Ovechkin signed a 13 year extension right off his ELC which didn't expire until years after they won the cup and he was 35. He was never in a position to vote with his feet because he didn't like the direction of the team. He'd have had to demand a trade which is a lot different than just leaving as a free agent.

maybe he extends this summer....maybe he doesn't, It's not a slam dunk either way. I personally think he'd be crazy to stay. IF they fade down the stretch and disappoint in the playoffs, it's certainly possible that he doesn't immediately sign an extension.

Thats not the point I was making. Only that yes Crosby had 2 at 28, but that Ovie won his first (and maybe more) at an older age. So he probably isn't concerned about that yet.

Putin became a US ally just in time for the Ovechkin PR machine to spin up.

Oh man that sucks ass.

Injury luck has not been kind for him, hoping for a brilliant recovery.
Devils have been really bad since the Christmas break. With how tight the race is their division I can totally see them fall out of a playoff spot. They’re definitely not going far without Hughes.

YIkes! Isn't that the second shoulder surgery for Jack Hughes? Praying it isn't the same shoulder. We could be talking about a 'career threatening' injury here.

The NHL as a whole can't afford to lose a talent like that, much less the Devils.

i am just glad we're not buyers right now. i remember thinking earlier this year gourde might be had for a second.

i do like bjorkstrand though. he kills us so glad he has switched conferences.

Expectations for another cup in Edmonton are through the roof. the city and fanbase have been planning parades since June 2015. 10 years later it isn't a reality and the pressure is building. If he isn't concerned about the lack of championships won, I'd be floored.

You know I really hated that Ovechkin was going to break the record because, well, Putin. But then Gretzky revealed himself to be MAGA and I no longer care.

Edit…how does Pool Party get another contract? Don’t understand the Panthers on that. He cant even be considered depth.

I think you are mixing up fan pressure and player expectations. I think he probably thinks they are really close after last years playoffs and I doubt he is truly thinking I better Lebron and go somewhere I can win. I think of course he wants to win and win soon though.

I didn't care whether Ovy broke the record or not. Hoping whether he did or did not wasn't going to change the result. I just didn't think it was possible as we are talking 18 - 50 goal seasons here basically. Late birthday so missed the 2003 draft by a couple of days, then lockout. So, rather than get it done by 36, he's doing it at like 39.

Gretz is probably too liquored up most of the time to realize how disappointed his parents would be. You couldn't meet a prouder Canadian than Walter Gretzky.
