Enjoy retirement, boys.
Conditional pick. Thomas won't report, so Boston gets nothing except relief from Thomas' 35+ contract and the Islanders get to the cap floor.

Eklund is saying that Tim Thomas was traded to the Islanders.
lol
If I'm an Islanders fan right now I'm raging. They are too cheap to even try to spend to the floor, and they are willing to give away valuable assets to make it happen.

Yup. A 2nd in this draft is no small asset.
AFAIK, cap hit persists even when you suspend a player. So for the Bruins, this removes it. They don't even have to collect on the 2nd and it's a win for them.
For NYI, it's a cap floor tactic, like you said. Even if he doesn't play, they get the cap-hit tacked on. Actually, for both parties, it's probably best he _doesn't_ play.

Does anybody know if Thomas' contract remains in tact, since he is being suspended?
Or does he become a UFA next year?
The pick won't be in this draft. It's a conditional 2nd in either 2014 or 2015. Thomas has to play at least one game for the Isles for Boston to get the pick.
I believe so. He gets suspended, doesn't get paid, contract still expires as it should. The penalty is that he doesn't get paid, not that the contract runs on indefinitely.
I realize. I just think Thomas may be crazy enough to play that 1 game. Even when the Isles don't want him to.
Assuming Thomas sticks with his initial plan on taking a year off (though like you pointed out there is the crazy factor ) couldn't the Isles extend his contract a year as they did with Nabokov?
This is just cap maneuvering by the Isles. It frees them up to move one of their veterans (Visnovsky being the obvious candidate) later in the year. No big deal.
Smart move by Snow actually - circumventing the cap without costing Mr. Wang a single cent (instead of circumventing the cap ceiling - they're circumventing the cap floor). And we're the team that gets punished by the new CBA.....
Free up cap space for the Bruins. Teams in the Northest division have to like that.
League will do jack **** about it though seeing as the Bruins owners carries alot of stroke at NHL HQ.
Still bad GMing from Snow, who else was going to take him. I can't believe they didn't at least get a 2nd or a 3rd from Boston straight up, with a conditional going back to Boston.
ie
Thomas + 3rd for Conditional 2nd
would have made just makes more sense to me. But hey the Islanders may have initiated this so Boston bent them over.
Guess who's the "Chairman of the board" (re: league governors who Bettman answers to)?yep. it's not a popular opinion and a lot of people will call me a conspiracy nut but it just seems like boston and other O6 teams get away with murder sometimes.

Jeremy M. Jacobs - owner of the Boston Bruins.
I guess someone has to be the chairman; but that sure smells like conflict of interest to me.
meh, I think you should take off your tin foil hat....

(and I'm kind of joking but it's easy to understand why others might think something doesn't smell right....)
The term is "tolling", and you have to apply to league for it which is what happened in the Nabokov case. Theoretically I don't see why they couldn't to Thomas, although someone who better understands the rule might correct me. I also don't see why they'd want to though.
LOL Washington
