Around the League 49: Leafs Embarrass Themselves, pt. 1967

The Deboer pulling Otter thing is blown out of proportion to me. Any coach would pull a goalie after two quick goals against early in a game and you need that shake up. It shouldn’t matter if it’s situation like last night. No one would blink at the pull in the regular season, yes it’s the potential season ender but if you would do it then you should do it now. Yes it backfired, but I think the reasoning for pulling him stands. They started awful, goalies get pulled in that situation.
I think people have reacted more because of his post game comments about it.

I don’t realize that the Stars are really challenged this off season. I’ve seen two models positioned by this folks. A very challenging one

a better one right at the cap :

A few years ago I would've said I wouldn't root against the Canadian cup drought ending but I'm all in for Edmonton in the rematch
I don't know, I want to feel that way but I'm also very tired of hearing how the West is the great conference and the East is garbage. The East winning two years in a row would be great, Florida losing would be great, Canadians being denied the Cup again would be great, and McJesus winning the Cup would be great.

As you can see I'm pretty torn on this

IMO there's one of these not like the rest. We're watching greatness with McDavid. I won't jinx him with any crazy projections but he deserves to win a Cup.

I think what people need to normalize is that one of these things happens to any team that loses. Either the stars don’t produce, the depth doesn’t produce or the goalie can’t make a f***ing save. Thats how losing works
Yep. I mean the Jets beat Dallas if Helle doesn't do his best Scott Darling impersonation on the road every f***ing time.

But guys that will go to the tough areas of the ice and commit defensively are far more likely to be effective even when they're not producing as things go deeper in the playoffs than perimeter players even if the later puts up video game numbers while the former is maybe a 60 point guy at best in the regular season. Biggest reason I love Stankoven and Jarvis is they are them even if that are undersized.

Management in Dallas must feel empty right now. The most talented version of the team wasn't good enough to take the next step.
I've been beating this drum for a while. Dallas has a great roster but they are screwed cap-wise for the next two years. I hope to God that an NHL team doesn't hand them a get out of jail free card by taking the Seguin contract for low price - dude is signed for $9.85M for two more years. If that happens, they can breathe again.

Otherwise, there's no chance they can re-sign Duchene or Granlund or Lundqvist and even getting Mavrik Bourque signed will be tight. Then, after 2025-2026, they have to re-sign Thomas Harley and Jason Robertson.

Thank God we get their 1st in 2026 and 2028, and I will once again beat the drum that we take on Seguin for their 1st in 2027. He'd actually be a good 2C for us and we could easily make it work with the cap. Probably better for the team to get Seguin for 2 years at $10M than Marner for 7 years at $14M.

Marchment interests me the most, outside of the good, prime aged players. Size on the wing. Unproductive playoff, which should drive down the price. I'd gamble on better in a contract year in 25-26. The team was interested in him previously; system fit has been evaluated.

Any of the cap dumps from Dallas interest me. If it's possible to extract another 1st from Dallas, I'd even be open to a Seguin cap dump. I agree, though, that Marchment would be a new look for our top-6.

Pencil him into the HOF.

Done deal.

You know, when we did the Stank <> Rants swap and got 1sts, I didn't even think about the cap situation...they could be in for a precipitous dropoff in standings. Could you imagine us landing another player as good as Jarvis with one of those picks?
Or if they trade their 27 pick to get out of cap hell. Miss the playoffs in 26 and win the lottery and we end up with McKenna.
