I’m pretty pro Torts overall. A lot of players have sworn by him, I think his bark is worse than his bite and he’s always been a very good guy behind the scenes. I do believe he’s a good coach and he just tells people like it is - which in today’s world has become a bad thing. He’s also been better with the mood as he’s aged. There’s been very few outbursts even with the media of late. I don’t think anything bad of his comments and I think it’s likely that the talks were already going on behind the scenes as much as it’s likely that his comments led to something.

I don’t want Rod fired by any stretch obviously but if he left and we had Torts I’d be fine with it. I think we’ve had plenty of guys over the years that could’ve used more of a stomp on the buttons than the gentle prodding with caring, supportive words they get from Rod. We’re a soft team generally imo. I think that’s always been a part of what we get out of the playoffs.

Agree with most of this, but I think Torts would be a terrible fit for this team. I think guys like Aho and Svech would react poorly to Torts coaching style and ultimately tune him out. Also, being physically soft is less about coaching and more about the players we acquire.

was torts the one with that report about him taking players' phones and showing their pictures on the big screen in front of the whole team or something? or was that babcock? I don't remember the details but that story was pretty ridiculous whoever it was

Babcock.

He was sharing pics on his phone on a screen about his life so they’d get to know each other and asked the players to do the same for fun. Didn’t work.

I think the terrible fit part, while maybe true might be a part of what the teams lacks. I think Aho would be fine, maybe not Svech but we’re hitting on something that might be an issue with Svech.

I believe the issue with Svetch is that he is a great human being and doesn’t really like hurting other players. That’s an issue with the Canes because they have a bunch of really nice/passive players and don’t have those playoff pricks that other teams have.

Re: Svetch. He sure takes the abuse, ie Jets have hurt him twice in last few years, but doesn’t dispense punishment the way guys like Bennett, Tkachuk, etc do it (outside of the massive hit in the bruin series a few years ago). Of course, the zebras sure notice him more than others too.

Carrying the load of being at times the only potential power forward can be unfair to Svech. It’s a lot to be the main target. At the same time that’s who he can be, and that’s been the path to his success. It’s the combination of traits, not just one. He isn’t skilled enough to be a pure skill player. He also seems to have lost something since his injury. It took Trocheck a few years to come back from his bad leg injuries, maybe that’s the case here but he’s lost his way currently. He doesn’t shoot like he did. You don’t have to injure people to play a gritty game. He’s shown multiple times in the playoffs even if he isn’t scoring, he can be a menace.

I don't know how you look at the forecheck this team plays and call them soft. Smaller than they could/should be, maybe. But soft? I don't get that.

Well, even with our forecheck, I feel like most of our ability to force turnovers (and thus keep offensive zone pressure) comes from our stick work and not our ability to play the body. I have no stats to back that up, of course, but that’s generally what my eye test is telling me. Compare that to Florida or Boston of recent years, who caused turnovers by physically removing the opposing team from the puck.

I’ve said a bunch of times I’m no strategy scholar but I know watching Torts teams his favorite style is crease crowding on defense and truculence on offense. Nothing wrong with either of those things of course but they’re not exactly revelatory and not every team is built to play that way. I don’t think torts is a bad person or whatever but I do think his tough guy persona is outdated

That Hall goal with his acceleration to the outside beating the Dman and taking it to the net the other night is what Svetch would do very often prior to his severe knee injury.

Just don't see that anymore and whether that's a fear of getting injured again or a loss of "the something" physical is up for debate. We do have a much bigger roster than previous years but as mentioned above they are not overly physical, rather space eaters that use their sticks.

Having said that, I do think the roster is more playoff ready with a collective of bigger forwards than previous years: Janky, Staal, Martinook, Carrier, Svetch, Robinson, KK and maybe throw in Stanky who sure plays bigger than his size.

D is smaller though (we will miss Skjei and Pesce's size in the zone) unless Nikishin comes in (which given the blackout from Ru on how severe his current injury is it makes him a question mark anyway).

btw: re: Svetch-I like him a lot (he was kind enough to give a puck to my granddaughter this year) as he interacts wonderfully with the public.

Every time I watch the Canes play a Torts team I walk away more open to the NHL banning going down to block a shot. John "block everything" Torts against Rod "funnel pucks to the point for low risk shot from the 2025 version of Ron Hainsey" Brind'amour makes for some unwatchable hockey
The 5-0 beat down wasn't good enough for you last time?

We're one the lowest hitting teams in the league, we never crash the net, we rarely win a box-out in front of the net...that seems pretty soft to me, but I'm curious what your criteria are?
