jesus Nachos looks good in Colorado.

It really does make me question our system. He's gonna get 100 points there. He just sniped a beautfil goal, but he was all alone, and hes getting Mackinnon passes too.

Plenty of open ice for him to skate cause 2 guys chase Mackinnon and leave him open. Either way Nachos looks like a damn superstar next to him. He would have never done that here.
Yeah seems like a combo of our system and the often mediocre line mates Nachos was subjected to here.

I know a lot of people talk about his inconsistency, but just think of some of the lines he was playing with—especially in the playoffs. Drury, for instance, is RIGHTLY a fourth line / 3rd line center at best on the Avs.

I mean Necas was pacing for 92 pts on the Canes this season. His most common linemates were KK & Robinson? He was well on his way to becoming a star in this league before getting the opportunity to play with Mack & Makar.
He had a really hot start and then cooled off, it's what he has done his entire career. He will score more in Denver their system doesn't demand his defensive responsibility. He's a good player and I wish him well, but I think we will see if he leave that team his numbers will drop back down.

necas numbers, since i am better with them than people:

18 pts in the his first 10 games, 1.8ppg
15 pts in his second 10, 1.5ppg - 33 through 20, 1.65ppg total
11 pts in his third 10, 1.1ppg - 44 through 30, 1.47ppg total
3 pts in his fourth 10, 0.3ppg - 47 through 40, 1.18ppg total
8 pts in he last 9 with the canes, 0.89ppg - 55 in 49 1.12ppg total

who knows how a theoretical rest of the year would go in carolina. during the flu dip, maybe he has another dry spell. or maybe he feels like he has to take over while everyone is sick and goes on a hot streak.

personally, i think he would have continued to cool. but, given how (relatively) soft our stretch run is i don't think he'd go too cold. probably ends up around 80 points, though i wouldn't have been surprised if he ended up in the 70s or low 90s. in that case, i'm not sure what he brings at the draft, but i'm sure it wouldn't have been a roster player with the reputation and results rantanen had before the trade.
he's a great fit with the avs' top line, and i truly wish him well. i also hope he puts up 100 this year and doesn't sign an extension until he puts up another hundred next year. because even though i like the avs, if there's a chance we ever see them in a final, i don't want their roster helped by a "cheap" necas deal.

He might warm up a bit but would go ice cold in the playoffs again.

The guy cannot lead an offense by himself. He hero pucks it way too much in crunch time. Maybe with Nate on his line he will avoid doing that going forward, but old habits die hard. Then again, with the opposing defense not able to sell out to shut him down, it does open him space that he never had here so he might not cool off.

Our biggest problem here is that we didn't have a top 3 player in the world to put on his line to mask his selfish play.

this may be me completely misremembering things, but it seems like during his hot start he had cut down on the hero puck. he was still a zone entry demon, but it didn't seem like he did so much of the skateskateskateturnover that we had gotten used to. once things started to cool, he went back to it a bit. i assume to compensate for his ordinary shoes line's decreasing effectiveness.

no idea if he is back to being more responsible with the puck / making a good pass before losing it in colorado, but i assume with a mackinnon or makar around it is wise as a teammate to give up on being superman.

The difference in watching him in CO is that after he sprints to take the zone, and he hits the brakes in a space there are people filling the passing lanes cutting through the defense ready for a pass. Also once that play works it keeps working because the defense backs off because it’s scrambling to handle the problem the pass will cause.

With us no one was ever in the right spot to get the pass, and it was easy for the defense to collapse because the play was low percentage with us.

So in CO, the most basic things Necas wants to do works better than it ever did for us. It’s not just Mackinnon and Makar. The whole team reacts to him far better than we did. Our guys always acted like they had no idea what he’s doing. He’s playing offense. Even when we had a few more offensive players we really weren’t a good offensive attacking team. I always felt that was part of why TT only really worked with Aho most of the time. Aho was the only one that would recognize where to go when TT would pull up.

"I'm confused, he sped into the zone and then hit the brakes and backed the defenseman off by like 8 ft, that means he's hard rimming it around the end boards to the trailing RHD, right?"

Still interested to see if Necas can keep it up in the playoffs - that was always his issue in my opinion. He very well may with the factors discussed above.

He had his best career playoffs last year (9pts in 11 GP), but he still seems scared to play playoff hockey.

All our offensive players drop in effectiveness in the playoffs, including Aho and TT who were generally easily rubbed out 5v5. Aho finds a way to get his points but he’s a far less dangerous player. Necas is usually on his own line without much support so collapsing on him was even easier in the playoffs.

Hard to be a solo act in the playoffs, especially when everyone know that’s what you’ve got to do.

Good night.

It’s seems hard for me to watch most Sharks games. One of the boys I coached this season on my son’s hockey team is a huge Sharks fan.. super fan level. I think it’s more the mascot and jersey versions, though.. they are nowhere near ready to come out of their rebuild. A couple good young draft picks getting ice time.. but boy it’s rough…. Nashville is pretty awful most nights and they probably had most of the play against the sharks that period.. doesn’t really speak as well for Nashville as you’d think.. more so just how bad sharks were. It was very choppy and not great quality hockey.. not a highlight reel to sell the beauty of what the game can look like…

I was watching the Avs Wild game after our game finished… that wasn’t great either.. Avs didn’t look great and no surprise their win streak ended tonight.. Wild goalie played well but not as well as they made him look tonight.. MacK and Necas awful shootout attempts..

Adding in….

Not sure I can keep watching…. It was more wide open to start the second.. at least there was a bit more flow and attempt to play well…. but Sharks have an awful PK and let Forsberg just skate around untouched until he wrists it home for a goal….

Officials not having a good night in this one either…. Multiple icing in a row where they didn’t blow the whistle until waaaaay too late.. someone going to get hurt if they keep that up…

After two: Nashville up 2-0 off two PPGs. Turns out letting Forsberg and Stamkos have all the time and space to score is generally a bad idea.

Although San Jose needs to stay out of the box

Also, TonyD gave up a SHG in the Islanders game. His stick exploded and Byfield took advantage

Preds show even against the Sharks they can’t play a full 60 without breakdowns and ebbing to bad habits and play….

They give up two quick ones and it’s tied….

And then Sharks show themselves and Preds back up 3-2…

It’s a battle of who will make the last bad mistake I guess..

And then Toffoli makes a great deke, gets the goalie way out of position...and puts it right through the crease
