According to Friedman, this contract and the others they threw out during the summer are a result of the pressure the Kraken feel to stay relevant in their city. They feel like they need to make splashy moves because they're worried their STHs won't renew at as high of a rate if they don't stay relevant, especially with the NBA eyeing a possible expansion into Seattle.

I know nothing about any sport outside of hockey, but a Google search says the Mariners are good (I think) and the Seahawks are middling?

Mariners are the definition of a mid franchise. Their idea of a good year is being a bubble team. Seahawks were irrelevant for decades but turned it around in the 00s and 10s. Still, they’re just a face in the crowd as far as the NFL is concerned.

Yeah I don't know what's going on there now. If it's panic that the NBA might be coming back and that's what Seattle was originally pushing for I get it, though making bad signings to stay in the news isn't the way to go about it.

That…..and they didn’t have a quality vet center and Stephenson was one of the only decent ones on the market.
