basically escrow is negotiated as a way for the owners to protect themselves against losses. The players put money in to it and as long as revenue thresholds reach a certain amount they get their money back. With no fans in the stands those numbers weren’t met. The players negotiated a number that they have to pay the owners back for missing revenues

The escrow percentage to be snipped off the players' salaries has been so great for the previous and this season, that those Free Agents with leverage have negotiated less salary to be paid for the said seasons in their new contracts.
