In a different era I do. I was a diehard WHA fan. So the Jets hold that pantheon for me of being the legend club from that league. But its not the same org now, that one is in Utah. Or am I keeping up?

Prosports by and large have passed the Winnipegs, almost passed the Edmontons but our city is a different beast now and fastest expanding in the nation.

Winnipeg can no longer support an NHL franchise anymore and only owner bleeding allows it to be there for now. The trouble in Winnipeg was that the joke Mullet arena was keeping focus off Winnipeg for a little while. That wasn't going to last and neither will a team in Winnipeg. Theres no future scenario in which the Winnipeg market and economy will support an NHL club. Just the reality that its borrowed time.

I appreciate the fiscal reality in the modern corporate board (bored) room NHL. The Jets are at least bankrolled by a mega Canadian one-percenter so we'll see if they can sustain themselves within the American expansionist NHL economy. There is big picture value in Winnipeg as another market within the lucrative Canadian broadcast contract which is where the big money lives. So we'll see how the team and league deals with this.

Personally I've shifted away from cheering against Canadian teams l loath, notably Leafs and Canadiens, to at least not cheer against them (except the Flamers). Holding onto a string with the direction this league is headed off-ice and on-ice so maintaining hope the diminishing Canadian presence can sustain itself competitively again on-ice and off.

I'm not flashy or into all that. Visit NY or London and can't stay there for more than 10days. Ready to come running back to an everyday place like Edmonton.

Never gets old but the Winnipeg Arena is next to a Radisson hotel and a dollar store. Must be a Giant Tiger around there too. Just shut the lights out already. Best record in league and they still have trouble selling tickets in the smallest arena in the league.

To those who missed it, the Arena was torn down in 2006 and later replaced by an office/retail complex called Polo Park North, which opened in 2013.

I don't have any affinity to the Peg ... other than a couple Winnipeg girls in prior life. haha. Did see a game in the ancient Winnipeg Arena against the Flyers where we were literally an unguarded 5 feet away from the Broad Street Bully's bench. A metaphorical scenario of a time and era in which there was little separation between player and fan! Beyond that it was memorable because Bobby Clarke and I think Paul Holmgren's jerseys had been stolen so they wore ones with weird numbers.

I once read an Op Ed lamenting Winnipeg's erosion as an economic and cultural driver once compared to Chicago but steadily to smaller centres. It speaks to your point. But I agree that it is a solid heartland city with a rich sporting and cultural history. I'm going to be hopeful the path to stay is there with the league diversifying its revenue base. Though I am pragmatic that sentimentality is not on the NHL owner agenda. The modern NHL would be lesser imo if its economic imperative drives the Jets out of Canada again.

Isn't that what replaced CanadInns stadium? I hadn't been to the older arena, despite my WHA love. Back then any beater I had wouldn't likely make it to Winnipeg. haha

Although the players getting called up would have to take VIA Rail to Edmonton so that might not be ideal.

One thing that helps the Jets in the short term is the fact their co-owner is one of the if not the richest man in Canada.

And rich guys like that love getting even richer. The Billion plus the Jets are worth would be a very nice return on his investment. The temptation to cash in may be too great. Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Tampa and Toronto have all had recent ownership changes and I think more are coming.

Depends though, it might be great for the seller, but at these prices, it's a risky endeavor for the buyer. And the Canadian sales were somewhat special circumstances.

Ottawa was from an owner passing away and the inherent family not wanting to hang on to the franchise.

Toronto's sale was as much as cash in to retire with, as it is that a media/telecommunications giant that seems to be tracking towards creating a monopoly on this country's sports markets and beyond.

If it were inherently risky you wouldn’t be fetching these insane prices though. Tampa Bays Jeff Vinik just cashed out in a big way. Every investment gets sold sooner or later.

If in Winnipeg the owners decide it’s better to cash out than invest a billion into a new rink, the Jets will be as good as gone.

Foegele scored 20G last year. Not like his scoring is coming out of nowhere. When he's on and playing his best game he's got some hands. He's worked tirelessly for the goals in LA. On several of them he made preceding plays leading to the goal scored.

Foegele's ideal game involves massive pressure and creating turnovers. For some reason he doesn't have the jam to play that game everytime. But he gives you 30-40 games in a season that are better than vast majority of players are giving. He needs to bring it more games but he has some game.

The season record to this point, any team, was 4 in a period. This might be a 50yr record. I can't remember seeing a 6-0 scoreline in a first period in an NHL game. This should require relegation. Some kind of leadership on that Pens club. Lead players to the Nightclub.
