Gives a perspective of how some players approach the game mentally. It generally takes passion and work ethic to make it as an NHLer.

Not the world per se, but the world is littered with majorly talented players, who didn't have the passion or the will, talent by itself will get you nowhere in life.

Sure, but you can apply this for any industry. I just think it's interesting.

I also think it's important to humanize the players to understand and tolerate imperfections.

Ovechkin leading the league in goals and is on pace for 68. While I don't expect him to keep up this pace or win the Rocket Richard it is still remarkable what he's doing at 39 years old. He got injured last night though.

Saw that and hope it's just a stinger, I mean it's absolutely remarkable that he's likely to set the goals record...it's even MORE remarkable that he stands to do it in fewer games than Gretzky despite missing so much of his prime in lockouts. Rooting for him!

Looks like torts likes the kid.
All of the blunders have kind of left this transaction in the shadows but oh boy if Grans becomes a legit NHL player.

Helge Grans made his NHL debut last night for Philadelphia and had an awesome game, 16:01 TOI, an assist, and a +2.

Good for Grans. He seemed to plateau in the AHL, so good for him for taking the next step.

I can't hate trading him away. Would have been nice if he showed more in Ontario.

Statistically Grans had a nice debut, but if you glance at Philly's GDT you would read several folks criticizing his play. Are they right? Who knows, but he's their 9th/10th defenseman playing due to injuries, lets consider that before the accolades and complaints get going.

That’s fair, it certainly explains the ebbs and flows where some guys can’t do it for 82 games. That single minded love of the game is certainly a factor between the very good and the elite players. For some players it takes time to find the right spot in terms of that consistency as the mental strength and mindset takes time… sometimes. Some guys never get it at all and that’s when some guys fall waaay short of what they should be achieving.

I agree though because despite the money these guys earn it can’t prevent human ‘flaws’ from affecting performance.
