Around the League - 2024-2025 Part II

Granlund is getting a lot of PP time, to be fair. 5 PP points

He wouldn't have seen much time here because we're always obsessed with the core 4 even if the PP is a disaster
I'm pretty sure Berube has tried other players outside of the core 4 to see if they could do anything and they largely weren't able to either. If Granlund were on the Leafs I'm pretty sure he would get some time on the PP when the core 4 wasn't producing and if he looked good, I would think Berube would continue to give him more PP time.

I don't know about that. They weren't going to demote Matthews, Nylander, or Marner. Probably not JT either, although I'd rather have Knies as the net front presence and he's much better at zone entries. They could've tried Domi over JT for more puck movement to open up the other guys

Too stubborn to make changes to the PP, just like the line combos

Could it be 2 players to make a huge difference?

But not two players in the lower tier.

So realistically, pick any 2 players who are UFA and add them to the current roster under contract for next year.

In the fantasy world let's say they will sign with the Leafs.

Who are they?

Do they move the needle?
Do they move the needle in the playoffs?

If it were 3 players, I'd go Ekblad, Bennett, Boeser. (Boeser over Ehlers)

But 2 players, Bennett and Boeser

If Leafs had anything cooking in the minors, to play in the Top 6, I'd go Ekblad over Boeser.

Of course, Tavares and marner are gone, unless Tavares takes a HUGE haircut to stay. But marner just doesn't fit.

I'd stay away from Ekblad - I think he has serious injuries, which is why he was risking the steroids. And Boeser feels like more of the same.

I'm a fan of Bennet and Ehlers. If we lose Mitch, but walk away with both of them (however unlikely), we're certainly a stronger team.

Berube has tried different players on the PP and for the most part they haven't worked either so of course he's probably going to go back to his best players and hope they can figure it out. Hypothetically if the second PP unit was having more success in scoring and creating high danger chances, I would think Berube would be smart enough to stick with them than default back to his first unit.

Also look at Knies. He wasn't always on the first PP, but he got a few shifts and looked good in front of the net and Berube continued to give him more time and now he's apart of the first unit. No reason to think that if Granlund got a few shifts on the PP that if he looked good that he couldn't take a spot from someone on the first unit. Just look at Rielly who for a long time was usually the only Dman to go with 4 forwards on the PP and eventually when he wasn't that effective they just went with 5 forwards.

With “all that talent” why do they not have two or three great PP units?

Anyone else enjoy watching Edmonton shit the bed last night, or is it just me?
When I saw it was 3-1 I didn’t even turn it on, but was pleased when I saw the score this AM.
It’s only one game and they tend to bounce back after looking horrible so I’ll wait and see before getting too excited.

McDavid and draisaitl can easily steal a game or two but I really can’t see them beating Dallas this year. As soon as they started getting into penalty trouble it was over
