Around the League - 2024-2025 Part II

I think they win at least one.

The games have been much closer than I thought.

Too bad Montreal doesn't seem to wake up til the third period.

Although that is probably more Was just trying to protect the lead
Montreal has also shortened its bench and riding their top line.

Not a good plan the longer a series goes.

If you hate the Oilers their PGT is absolutely amazing.
Go enjoy some schadenfreude, but don’t post and get yourselves infractions.
This goes for pretty much every opposing teams GDT's. Post at your own risk; when I was a mod here i had no tolerance for opposing fan bullshit in our GDT's and the same principles apply elsewhere.

Jesus, I forgot about the Ryan McLeod / Savoie trade. What a trainwreck of an off-season the Oilers had, and the fans all ate it up  They should've just kept around McLeod, Holloway, Broberg and Foegele and they would've been set for the future, instead of continuing to invest in losers like Henrique, Connor Brown, Kulak, Arvidsson, Jeff Skinner etc.

Henrique is a case study in buyer beware when making trades.

With Anahiem he played with Zegras and Terry. 2:21 a minute on the PP, good teammates, you are going to put up decent points.

Traded to Edmonton, reduce your 5v5 minutes, no PP time of note, and you play with Jarnmark and Connor Brown, your points are going to drop.

If you get a player, reduce the quality of their teammates, and quality of time on ice, and you aren't going to see the same production.

A guy we've talked about here, who has had terrible teammates, and less time on ice, but more points in the regular season is Peyton Krebs....

Armstrong was extremely savvy in offer-sheeting Holloway and Broberg...literally fast tracked St. Louis' rebuild with no delay...that's what a great GM does...unlike outside the box thinker, boy genius in Pittsburg getting a familiar face in Andreas Johnsson, and then Bunting, after he got there, making Pittsburg a powerhouse right now. :sarcasm:

Agreed, Armstrong should be in consideration for GM of the year. He also wasted no time in snatching up Jim Montgomery when the opportunity presented itself.

It's just incredible to me how Edmonton hasn't addressed their most glaring weakness in so many years. They have probably the two most offensively gifted players in the world, and a sieve between the pipes.

I realize it's tough to get a goalie, but yikes.
Leafs were in the same kind of boat. Top F heavy in salary cap era would give you that. To win the cap these days you need pretty balanced lineup, good trades, few hits with drafting and stars on team-friendly contracts.
Oilers exchanged young players for older vets and even though they spent on G position they gave money (as Leafs in the past) to wrong guys.
Then you need some luck. And I feel we got lucky with Stolarz and few trades to shore up our D with not #1 stars, but all 5 decent and big #2-#3 + Benoît who is amazing D in his role (great rush last game too).
We like to complain about our third line, but if that is only issue on your team in cap era (and you can do much worse than Domi-Holmberg/Kampf-Robertson) then you are in right position.

I thought I would copy here some posts from Oilers PGT that I liked very much.

- I like you line up with Empty Net. I will go with him too.
- It’s all coaches fault as they failed in developing defensive system that allows our goalie to not move.
- and Oilers haiku:
Powerless Peepee
Swiss Cheese Skinner stops nothing
More braindead defence

Oh yeah, for sure. We moved on from Campbell at the right time, but finding a goalie hasn't been easy either like you said (Murray, Samsonov). Other teams have also struggled to sort out their situation in net, Ottawa being another example.

It just seems like such a rare bird to have a talent of McDavid'd caliber, and then to have a second one in Draisaitl. I feel like my first impulse when gifted with that situation would be to spend all my assets moving heaven and earth to get the best goalie out there. Apart from Ekholm, I feel like nothing should be off the table in Edmonton to address that position.

Has to be frustrating to be a fan of that team if they can't turn it around.

Oilers could have won game 1 and there would have been down stream effect. You win game 1 - LA thinking twice in game 2. Completed comeback from 0-4 would give pause to any team. I felt that at 2-3 LA was a bit timid as well in game 2.

And he still has 5 years on his contract with Pitt. His bank account would be full no matter what. And even after that another team can still give him a job because you can do much worse than KD in this league.
One series win in multiple playoff runs with a core of Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares...how much worse can a GM get in the NHL? Yes, it could be worse, but not by much.

Unless, like some have argued that the problem is Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares collevtively.

Hopefully we learn something conclusive thsi year
