Around the League - 2024-2025 Part II

Edmonton is absolutely screwed if they give Bouchard as much money as he thinks he deserves. Also not getting a goalie is going to be the biggest what if’s for this Oilers core. Their chance was last year.

Losing the two UFAs had a huge impact on the Oilers. Looks like it’s them and Ottawa as the only two Canadian based teams eliminated in the first round.

I know your stance on Montreal has a bit of "assume the worst" to it, and most will say that Montreal has no chance against Washington, but I wouldn't be surprised if Montreal wins both home games.

Laine is getting burned on the Habs board.

What a difference from before.

He seems like a perfectly fine and likable guy but Laine is clearly a one-tool mental midget who, if he had committed to the gym and the skating coach from day one, would have been a superstar in this league. He was never going to be as good as Matthews because you can't teach the instincts or build Matthews has, but he could have been a 40-55 goal guy year in and out.

Yes of course he still got paid a shit ton of money - but a little more resolve and discipline and he'd be up in the generational earners category.

At least they can comfortably afford to eat his cap, and their rebuild was shorter than Detroit or Buffalo's. I'm not saying they'll make the dance again next year, but I'll take their core of Hutson, CC, Suzuki, Slafkovsky and Demidov over any other up and comers in the Atlantic. If they had have got Michikov or even Leonard or ASP then they'd be something to worry about.

I am still nonetheless happy for the Habs fanbase, happy the Habs will not be getting one of the drafts' top ponies, and will be even happier if they can rattle the Caps' cage and push the series to maybe six games, but I just don't see that happening. Aside from Carolina-Jersey that series is the most likely to be a 4 and done.

I have learned never to count out the Oilers. It’s not over until it’s over. Fully expect them to tie this series up.

One word: McDrai.

Not saying I am not loving seeing them being down 0-2.

They were RFA's, not UFA's. They could've easily matched those contracts if they just dumped Ceci (lmao) and another small piece, but they decided to not match and let two top 10 draft picks walk for some 2nd round draft picks lol

Even worse I think their asks in negotiations with the Oilers were less than what they ended up signing their offer sheets for.
The Oil tried to squeeze them and got burnt. All so they could sign/re-sign a bunch of over the hill guys.

I think they win at least one.

The games have been much closer than I thought.

Too bad Montreal doesn't seem to wake up til the third period.

Although that is probably more Was just trying to protect the lead
