Around the League - 2024-2025 Part II

When the Leafs clinched in 2017 we had to beat a Penguins team that were the defending champs and about to win another one in the second last game of the season. These Habs can’t even beat a lowly Blackhawks team at home to clinch.

I guess Montreal will have to wait again until their last game to try clinching the last playoff spot in the eastern conference.

Quite the turn of events.

Who would have thought last Thursday that MTL wouldn't have a playoff spot locked up yet?

CLB's last two opponents are very beatable (PHI and NYI). I hope CAR tries against MTL and doesn't gift them a playoff spot. They were uncharacteristically nonchalant against TOR after the first 15 minutes.
If the Habs completely blow this away and somehow Columbus gets in, how epic of a collapse would that be? Just last week They were 8 points ahead of Columbus with only 5 games to go. I thought the blue jackets were done after back to back shutout losses to Toronto and Ottawa on the road last week. Now they have a good chance to secure the last spot in the eastern conference playoffs against two weak opponents, at PHI and versus NYI at home.

The Hockey Media has been talking about the flames chances of making the playoffs on the west, how if they even get in, they’d be only the 2nd team in the last 50+ years to get in being 5 points out with 4 games left. Columbus was 8 points out with 5 left in their schedule.

Yeah, this would be bad...

Maybe not quite as bad that TOR collapse in Game Seven against BOS in 2013... but not too far removed from that.

A colossal collapse like this can really hurt a young, up and coming team's morale and image as well. The Leafs were branded chokers because of a culmination of events (like blowing three different leads to BOS in 2019 and blowing a 3-1 lead to MTL in 2021). If the Habs miss the playoffs this year and don't bounce back next year, some damage may be done to that core's psyche.

Yes, and we’ll have a better chance of going far if the Florida teams spend time beating each other up in round 1. That’s in jeopardy as long as Tampa has a chance to pass us.

And don’t give me the odds of how unlikely that is. What were the odds the Leafs would blow a 4-1 lead in the third in game 7? The odds we’d blow a playoff spot with an 8 game losing streak in 2014? The odds we’d lose to a Zamboni driver? The odds we’d blow a 3-1 series lead to the Habs?

This franchise lives to defy the odds in a bad way. Any tiny advantage we can get is most welcome, and we will very much lose one if Florida goes into Tampa not only on a back to back, but unmotivated to try and take points from them.
Idk about points, but Florida would play tampa hard, finish their check to soften them up and try to get into their heads before their series. We should all watch that preview. lol

Don't really care if MTL makes or misses out on the playoffs but I am glad it's coming down to their very last game.
Montreal has a bright future. Huston and Demidov plus Hagel from one draft. That's like Marner ,Reilly and Kadri in one year. Take the higher pick this summer and keep building. They maybe only one good player away.

Montreal isn't finished building through the draft yet. They have zero chance this year.

I feel bad for what happened to Laine and his mental health issues over the years but wow has he fallen off a cliff as a player. He is brutal to watch.

He doesn’t love hockey anymore, after his dad passing, he just seems like a shell of himself. It’s sad to see him just have no compete

Sportsnet will be airing it. I cant imagine what the tv ratings will be lol
Idk if Carolina will be resting players but I'd be terrified if I was a Habs fan needing to get a point against Carolina. They are a terrible matchup for the Canadians.

And I'd add that the leafs have owned Tampa for the last three years.
Another reason why I want to play the panthers more than the bolts : Brad Marchand. Our old nemesis, enemy, boogeyman and playoff tormentor since the last decade during all these Boston series , now plays for Florida.

Him being on the panthers makes me hate them even more . And I legitimately hate the panthers.

And if the leafs can’t have the opportunity to finally slay the Boston dragon, maybe we will have a chance to slay the Marchand one and at least get some measure of revenge for all the Boston playoff series losses instead.

Or one of their dmen hitting another level think they need a goalie though
