Around the League - 2024-2025 Part II

That would be insane for sure.

Had a real shot at 50 this year if he didn't break his fibula.
But if he didn’t miss 16 games from Nov. 21-Dec. 23 because of a fractured left fibula, he would’ve broken the record already and reached easily the 900 goal plateau. Bad luck for him as Ovechkin has been rarely injured in his career. Despite his physical and intense style of play as a power forward and heavy forechecking scoring winger, he miraculously found a way to avoid the injury bug until this year.

Despite missing a full month due to injuries, Alexander Ovechkin still leads the Capitals with 39 goals in 58 games this season and he is only one goal away from reaching 40 goal mark for the 14th time in his 20 NHL seasons, which would increase his League-record total.

Without the two lockouts of 2004-05 and 2012, and the COVID era of 2020-21, he would have probably scored 950 goals at least in his career.
With all those extra games played, maybe they wouldn't still be producing as high as they are... but between the lockouts, COVID, and the NHL refusing to play ball with the IIHF, we lost some incredible hockey from Ovechkin and Crosby.

IMO he would've won the Rocket. He was scoring at an insane pace at the time of his injury... To have missed 17 games with a pretty significant injury and then come back and still be tied for third in goals at this point in the season is ridiculous.

Also missed out on Jagr breaking some big records (also his own fault for leaving for the KHL). He probably gets to 800+ goals and 2000+ points otherwise

-Tkachuk is day to day with an upper body injury and will not play tonight.

Sure... but that doesn't substantiate the claim that he will be out for a while...

Just like Matthew T claim he isn't coming back for the playoffs.
If you believe the words "day to day" at this time of year, I have a very nice bridge to sell you.

So very true.

Guys like Bossy never had a "back 9" career like Gretzky and Ovechkin did so he never saw a natural decline.

Bossy vs Gretzky - First 10 years

Bossy: 573 goals in 752 games = .762

Gretzky: 637 goals in 774 games = .823

Leading the league in goals during this span:

Gretzky - 5
Bossy - 1

Mario probably without the health issues probably would have been the best.
He, like Ovechkin, wasn't a comparative smurf like Gretz or Bossy.
Gretz was so far in front of the field in his heyday winning the Ross by 20-30 goals.

Bossy forced into retirement with a bad back.
In a full season never had less than 51 goals.

Gretz also undone by a bad back that required surgery.

I also read that Mario was an avid smoker too. Makes you wonder how much better he could have been without that and also without the hooking and holding.

Different eras for sure.
