I still find it extremely hard to believe he actually said that...
Pretty much everything he says does line up. Three of the latest non-Rantenen examples:

Guntzel: Canes org knows they f***ed this one up and that's why they started out offering at 100 million dollar contract to Rantanen. By all reports Jake really enjoyed playing with Aho and the Canes. I think in typical Canes fashion, management thought they could save cash and negotiated way harder than they needed to. Jake should still be a Hurricane.

Pesce: Because Carolina took so long with Jake, once Jake decided to leave, Carolina wanted to double back on Pesce. Pesce still wanted to be here but it was radio silence on Carolina's end and because cap was tight, once Jake didn't come back, then they could try to convince Brett to come back but it was too late and he ended up taking the bigger contract in Jersey. I don't think we were ever going to match what Jersey was giving as he was showing signs of slowing down before leaving.

Necas: Necas wanted to be a C. Rod never let that happen because Necas was far to irresponsible defensively to let him play C. His defense improved this year as I distinctly remember him making quite a few hustle plays on breakaways, but the trust wasn't there. When Necas signed the two year contract it was created for two years instead of one so that they could trade him. Who knows if it's true or not but when was traded, Necas said he was surprised as he thought that things had smoothed over. I do think he would have signed a long term contract here but I think he's in a better place in Colorado as he can be more free to play his natural game. I'm still rooting for him.

this is interesting.....................

Lol just drags the organization

So the 4 teams: Obviously Dallas and Toronto, and reportedly Florida was another. Curious about that last one - maybe Edmonton since they were trying to trade for him?

This whole Rantanen thing has been fascinating. I hope they come out with a deep dive documentary or something lol

Why do think Toronto was an obvious one of the 4?
If I were to guess, I'd go Dallas/Florida/Tampa/L.A.

I guess I shouldn't have included them in the 'obvious' category, but McKenzie reported that Toronto was a preferred destination had he made it to July 1st. Sounds like he was going to sign if the trade went through. Seravalli also confirmed Toronto on a recent podcast

He wasn't willing to sign with L.A. long-term from what I read

Thanks, hadn't heard that.

I believe Rantanen would had signed with the Leafs if the trade went through as I doubt Tre would be asking if he is unsure about that.

Also Canes might be asking for MM inorder to jack up the price for the other teams, since if MM is in play, Stars probably need to send Johnston instead of Stankoven.

Lastly, Tre wants to trade MM or else he could had said No from the beginning without needing to confirm with MM and see if he would like the trade.

Leafs asked Marner to waive which IMO is only possible if they had an 8 year contract for Rantanen in place. I mean why would Tre trade a rental in marner for another rental in rantanen? to me that doesn't make much sense unless Tre beleives Rantanen>>>Marner

It looks like we may be staring down the barrel of a Toronto/Ottawa first round series. Ottawa is looking good right now for that first wild card spot.

One. You just guaranteed it Will never happen.

Two. I prefer it. If the leafs actually lost to Ottawa. I would say it was rock bottom, but at this point who is to say.

Going to be tough to win the division.

Leafs have been ass for a month straight.

Tanev will help, but still. In what possible way makes you so confident the Leafs can win the division?

Tanev, Carlo, Stolarz have the beginning of a team that can win, but we are still tied to the core.

I believe they can all win seperately, but not collectively. I hope like hell I am wrong

Florida choking away a 2-0 third period lead. Not over yet though.

Boston somehow makes the playoffs and beats Marchand in the first round......make it happen!
