For all the building through the draft stuff, that 2012 team didn't have all that many DL-drafted players on it. Can give him partial credit for Brown, Kopitar, and Quick, but who knows if he would've drafted them had he been given the same chance to. Not to say that had DL been here in 2003, taking Parise, Getzlaf, Kesler, and Richards instead would've been a bad move. I can certainly see him going for Richards, and maybe the Kings would've been better off for it. It also could've changed the entire trajectory of the franchise into some alternative history.

It would see a reduction of regular-season games, the addition of both an in-season tournament and a playoff play-in, and re-seeding the Conference Finals based on regular-season standings.
I asked around to see how much of this the NHL has looked at. The answer is: a lot. The re-seeding of the Stanley Cup semifinals was originally part of the last divisional/playoff re-alignment. The league wanted it, but teams and players pushed back because of travel worries. Not enough people wanted to risk, say, a Montreal-San Jose third round. We know the commissioner hates the play-in, and a player texted me this season to stop “with that stupid idea.” In-season tournament? Let’s see if a World Cup gets done for February 2021, and how everyone feels about that.

It says took a long look at Martinez. I wouldn't say that's necessarily synonymous with almost. Martinez isn't a team changing player either, so not sure it's the bold move Montreal needs to pull the trigger on to save a season or a job.

I've been on board with re-seeding the 3rd round since they brought it up back in 2013. I'd even say, if the #1 seed is in the East, they can pick between the 3rd or 4th seeds(if #4 is a west coast team) to play if they're so terrified of having to cross a time zone. I wouldn't be opposed to re-seeding the 2nd round either. I'd go 1-16 in the playoffs, but I get why there's no chance of that happening again.

What season is Clague's make or break season? Is it possible that it is this one? I mean going into camp I would have thought he would be one of the favorites to make the club out of camp. Walker, Roy and Bjornfot getting NHL games over him is a shot against no?

He turned 21 last June, and this is his 2nd pro season. Walker and Roy are 3/4 years older. Bjornfot played 3 games, and didn't stick. Is that getting NHL games? Technically. Didn't crack 13 minutes of ice time on average. Other than LaDue, it's the least amount of ice time for a d-man on the team.

What Clague shows is that don't assume with prospects. Unless you're talking top of the draft, no question about it, elite level prospects(and even then, it's not always guaranteed), don't expect prospects to do X, Y, or Z. In the Ontario thread, Kupari is still learning. Might take him another year+ before he's good to go. Nobody wants to hear that. We want the Cup vets gone, we want all the young guys in there, we want to see the future today. If we only see Kupari in Sept 2021, of even worse, Feb 2022, we'll lose our minds. Then you remember, he's only 19, wasn't like the 2nd overall pick in a deep draft, and won't even be 22 in Feb 2022. Not to say Kupari couldn't make the team in Sept 2021. He'll get his chance, for sure.

For a 2nd round pick, considering the odds of 2nd round picks ever making a difference in the NHL, Clague has to get through his senior year of college before writing him off. If he hasn't played even a game for the Kings by the end of 20-21, then he becomes a problem. But by then, if he's no good, you just don't qualify him. The vast majority of prospects need time. 2 or 3 years. Even guys that are nothing but decent role players.

Fair...I am just wondering what season do we point to him and say this is when he should be contributing at the NHL level. I know that D take longer to develop but seems like we have been talking about him for a long time now.

I guess it felt the same with Forbort too.
 
we have to be getting pretty close to a larger or at least a medium scale trade right? I know there have been a few deals since the season began but they are smaller IMO. Last year November had the Pearson/Hagelin deal, Strome/Schmaltz trade and Steom/Spooner deal.

Hopefully we see something soon

Re: Clague in particular, I think I'd be worried if he doesn't get a callup and play some games next season. Also not just playing some games, but also looking halfway decent.
Especially if you consider the high possibility of the Kings moving a lot of the vets this deadline/offseason.

Not that I would completely close the door on him if he didn't, but it would probably happen with another organization like with Hickey.

with him too it seems like he has been passed by some other prospects like Anderson, Bjornfot and Walker. Doesn't mean Claque won't develop jsut causes me pause in wondering if he will have a long term role with the Kings
 
Clague still has two more seasons of waiver exemption status. Think about how long we had Derek Forbort in the minors - I see no reason why Clague couldn't be the same. Plenty of time for him to mature and gain experience.

Walker definitely. We'll see about Bjornfot and Anderson this season and next. But if they do pass Clague, I'd hope Blake can get something for him instead of losing him on waivers like Hickey.
 
Between Anderson and Bjornfot, Clague is moving down the LHD chart pretty quickly. Moverare is gathering attention, too, and he may come over next season.

Definitely not calling him a bust, but he definitely needs to make the most out of his opportunity when he gets called up. More players will be getting more opportunities very soon, and he doesn't want to get lost in the shuffle.

He now has the luxury of marinating all he wants since he's getting surpassed. Frankly, I think he's a dud. It's not physical skills keeping him out of the NHL. Think Jack Johnson.

He needs to develop a compass in his own zone, but his offensive abilities aren't good enough to deploy him as a specialist. Long road ahead if one to the NHL at all.

I know. It would be even worse if an eastern powerhouse had to play at 10:30pm EST during the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd rounds, as the #1 seed(see: why Toronto, Detroit, and Columbus all wanted out). Every game on the west coast might just have to start at 5pm local time to make up the difference. Just that in theory, 1-16 is the best concept. I don't have to care about the travel. Too many geographic realities to account for though, which is why the system has been the way it is since 13-14.

MacKinnon would 'take less again' to help Avalanche: report

Nathan MacKinnon said he would take less money in his next contract to help the Colorado Avalanche in their effort to win the Stanley Cup.

"We have guys that we wouldn't (otherwise) be able to bring in," the 24-year-old center told Forbes on Wednesday. "On my next deal, I'll take less again because I want to win with this group."

MacKinnon is in the fourth season of a seven-year contract with an average annual value of $6.3 million, well below the contracts of other marquee players in the NHL.

"I was just excited to get paid that much money at such a young age," said MacKinnon, who was 20 in the summer of 2016. "Obviously, it's pretty (team) friendly now, but I was worth that at the time. ... I have no regrets."

It's easy to say that when your next contract is going to be in 2023. Should the Avs win it before then, it'll be interesting. If you win a championship, is the next non-guaranteed one more important than the guaranteed money? He's only 24. In a couple years, if he gets/has a wife, does he have a kid? I don't see any definition of less either. Less, relative to what? Left himself a little wiggle room there, should his team first quote come back to bite him. We'll see.

Main board is saying Mrazek deserves it. F****n morons. Thornton comes in late first of all. Mrazek swings at him which he should but misses. Then Thornton straight punch to the neck/chin. Maybe he dove a little but that was a pretty heavy punch in my opinion. Seriously hope he never wins a cup can't stand this guy.
 
mrazek does a lot of that cheap interference shit outside of his crease though, i don't have much room in me to feel bad for him

he pushed the limits of his protection again and he got popped for it

it's a pretty solid punch but world class embellishment
 
Big Joe looks like a crazy old man with that messy beard. Always reminds me of this guy when I see him
