Travis Dermott went out with a shoulder injury and did not return. Didn’t look too good.

Not sure why the Leafs didn’t add some depth on the backend at the deadline, regardless of the Dermott injury.

Gardiner also listed as week to week.

They have a couple defenseman with their AHL affiliate banged up as well.

Can never have enough defenseman going into the playoffs.

The Kings used Jeff Schultz versus the Quacks back in 2014.

Depth is key.

Unless you’re 2012 LA where the same 6 D played every game. Talk about a miracle.

Tonight is a perfect example of why it's gonna be hard for the Kings to fall much further than like 6th in lottery odds. You have ANA vs CHI and VAN vs COL, last night BUF vs PHI and FLA vs AZ, these games between teams between that either aren't making the playoffs or are on the fringes. Someones getting points.

16 seconds from 2 3-point games and making me look like a genius.

So much for the Hughes Bowl on Saturday. I thought for sure both the Kings-Hawks would be battling it out for the top 3 pick in the draft by the March game.

Yeah, that was.

We did give them warning, saying he was our best Dman. The others have been (and are still) playing like crap.

One thing that always pushed Muzzin up the depth chart was his willingness to take more chances and learn from his mistakes, and to try to adjust his timing.

Martinez was always a "safer" player, but Muzzin had a higher ceiling.

It's a tradeoff we accepted and now Toronto must, too.

You’re probably right, since Kucherov is running away with the scoring lead (albeit on a stacked team). Kane possibly willing those Blackhawks into a playoff spot will be one of the top stories of the season.
The Hawks are still 5 points back with three teams to leapfrog with 18 games left, so let's not get ahead of ourselves. Great story if it happens, but their chance of getting in just leaped over 5%, according to Sport Club Stats.

He's gone from the penthouse to the outhouse in just a few weeks. Toronto is just a brutal place to play. I'm not sure he got this kind of heat his entire career combined in LA.

Of course the NMC is now like a prize in the box of cracker jacks, every contract comes with one.

Dumb, really dumb.

I don't know why you think that it is dumb. Why wouldn't the player want some sort of control over where he will be over the course of his contract?

Dumb of the GM. Why should a GM accept losing the ability to trade a player and make the best deal possible for the franchise.

Trades are a part of the business for players. GMs are being far too short sighted in handing out too many NMCs.

it's fine that the player can demand one, too many GMs are too chickenshit to say no

i think signing ANY player to an 8 year contract in a game this physical is a horrible business decision, much less one where he can refuse to go where you're trading him 5 years down the line

Too many GMs have an attitude of "Why should I care, I won't be here in 8 years."

Upper management bears a lot of this responsibility as well with the "It's easier to fire the GM/coach than it is to fire the players." mentality.

More often than not it's the players who are responsible for a team's place in the standings.

Wouldn’t surprise me to learn that some kind of weakened NMC was one major thing Dean pushed for in Kopitars last negotiation and a reason for the extension getting done well into the final term of his expiring contract.

NMC's are the price of doing business for the big money contracts these days. Owners have leverage in CBA negotiations, players have leverage in individual contract negotiations. GMs take their chances either way. Don't give it to him, you probably won't get the talent. Give it to him, and you're essentially stuck with the talent, whatever may happen to the talent.

Until the next lockout, expect players to get the better end of the deal when GMs are desperate for talent. After the next lockout, expect the players to get the better end of whatever the new deal is when GMs are desperate for talent.

In whatever aspect of life, it pays to have talent. Even if it's just a little bit, as long as you're in the right place at the right time.

The next CBA will fix this hopefully. It's not only bad for the teams, it's bad for the fans.
