Amen. I'll bring the shovel. Goes way beyond the 'tired cliche' zone.

Yeah, I think this year proved that those excuses were throwing darts at the board trying to find an answer that made it easier to accept.

Gotta love the Kings though. They strip Brown of the C, and some people say it's a disgrace. Muzzin makes Team Canada, which upsets a bunch of people. Not that a Canadian defenseman on the Kings upsetting some Canadians is new. Unfortunately, the hate isn't as sweet when the team isn't as good. Still fun though.

If it wasn't a flipped switch, I don't know what you want to call the 2012 - 2014 Kings in the playoffs...

Can definitely say it's broken now, but imo it's revisionist history to pretend that concept didn't exist. Maybe not so much in 2012, but the 2013 Kings looked lost going down 2-0 to the Blues before they came back and rocked as hard as they could despite injuries and such, and we all know how the 2014 Kings looked.

Sure it's a cliche because they were intangibles, but those Kings would just not be broken, despite not being the best team on paper. Pretending that's not a thing because it eventually stopped working is like the people on the main board mocking the Hawks because they couldn't get a 4th cup this year. That's sports, and in one with such parity, multiple cups in a short period of time is an immensely rare feat that requires more than a little bit of magic.

Maybe it's flipping the switch, but a team has to have something to flip the switch. I would say that thing is confidence, as vague and intangible as that is. The Kings between 2012(after Sutter came along anyway) and 2014 had that.

It's a little odd, because they have so many guys that have seen and done basically anything a hockey team can face, but as sure of themselves as they were in the golden age, they've lacked that in the last 2 years. Why? Or, maybe it's been overconfidence. Did it before, can do it again.

Or, despite what players and coaches say, they know if they're on a team with that "it" factor. Each guys trusts the the guy next to them to not only do their own job, but trusts them to not let a mistake get to them.

Or, it simply comes down to personnel. Lose Voynov for nothing, can't find a replacement. Some guys get hurt. Some guys get older. Some young players don't overachieve. Cap issues cost a team a player here, a player there, and it eventually adds up.

The analytics community in a nutshell.

Prior to this offseason: Drew Doughty isn't even the best D-man on his own team, Jake Muzzin is the real stud, one of the most underrated d-men in the league

Right after the world cup selections: LOL JAKE MUZZIN REALLY? WHAT A BUNCH OF SNUBS. TERRIBLE DMAN TERRIBLE SELECTION.

For a bunch of people who think their opinions are more sound and more important than real-life NHL people because they're grounded in fact/science (ignoring that those analytics leave gigantic chunks of the picture out), you would think they would pride themselves on the consistency of opinion that's 'informed' by the numbers they live on.

Love the Muzzin over Subban meltdown. "He won the Norris , how do you leave that type of guy off ?" Because he won it by scoring, not playing defense.

Its because we set our goal to make the playoffs and just that. I remember specifically in 2012 when the talk on tv and the radio was that the goal was to win the Cup. It was refreshing to hear that and it was more serious than just a mention. After we missed in 2015, our goal suddenly changed from winning the Cup to making the playoffs (because we thought we could repeat 2012). Once we hit our goal we stopped playing. It was frustrating.

It was infuriating listening to Sutter game after game say division or conference title don't mean anything, only making the playoffs. Well we did just that , made the playoffs and like you said stopped playing. The team looked so good leading up to the game after they clinched, and then took a nose dive.

Jack made it for the same reason Muzzin made Team Canada, a lack of left handed options.

Still don't know why Niskanen made it over Faulk or Shattenkirk as RHD options, same with EJ, but he has always been a huge USA hockey favorite.

Abdelkader was a foolish selection from the start, reminded me of Canada bringing Rob Zamuner back in the day. They have enough of what Abdelkader provides and not enough of what Kessel does. And Adelkader has been dreadful in the playoffs during his career, and Kessel may win the Conn Smythe if the Pens win the SC.

Bobby Ryan is never going to be play in a best vs. best tournament unless he does so well in the NHL that it forces their hand. This i a guy who was left off a WJC team despite being a #2 overall pick, and was also left off the Sochi Olympic team.

Tyler Johnson being left off is a bit strange, but he is 5'7 and Dean Lombardi is the GM.

I'll never forget how hard Brian Burke campaigned to keep him off the Sochi roster. That was a ****ing disgrace.

"Can't spell intensity" my ***.

I think campaigned is a hard word. Some dramatic statements made in a strategy session and wasn't really suppose to be public isn't a "campaign."

Besides.... it's not like he's wrong.

A bit OT, but some guy on another forum(in a thread for the Indy 500) is giving me **** because I hoped the Sharks would get embarrassed in the SCF. This came up because the guy who won the race is from California.

According to this dude, I HAVE to root for all CA teams, no matter what. I'm not allowed to hope for nothing but misery for the Sharks. It's not right because this other guy wore a Kings hat in NYC during Game 6 in 2014 at some bar rooting for us.
