I suspect they let him free, the minute all HC positions are filled, probably mid July assuming Toronto gets their list whittled down from 5000 to a single candidate.

He then has to dangle until November when casualties start to occur and he becomes a target for clubs looking. They then can say they didn’t hold him back from coaching the season (but effectively prevented him from going to a divisional rival).
