He clearly must have been a left handed first baseman growing up making that dive to stop a line drive from going to right field.
I’d take him on a league minimum / cheaper

That's a lot of money for Saad to walk away from.
I'd definitely be looking into giving him a shot, unless there are any character issues there.
I doubt that would have been the case. Boone and his attitude/work ethic was pegged as a future captain of the team the day he was drafted. I'm not sure anyone ever thought of Saad in that way when he was drafted.Saad and Jenner were drafted 6 picks apart in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft. An interesting thought experiment is what would have happened with their careers if Jenner was drafted by Chicago and had early Cup success and Saad was drafted by the Jackets and didn’t have the early success. Would Saad have been a harder worker later in his career? Would Jenner coasted more after the early success?

If anyone would have had an opportunity to coast it would have been Boone due to the lack of direction/winning in this team like many people have done. Some people are just wired a certain way.
Just seems like apples and oranges because they are different types of players.Give Boone some cups and then a back injury, I don’t know. I’m not saying he would reach Saad leve of not reaching his potentiall, but he might say he had had a good career already and not battle back from injuries so hard. Meanwhile Saad might not have coasted like he did much of his career if he still had some goals (like the Cup) in front of him. I guess I question how Saad’s career would have turned out more than Boone. Give Saad the drive that Boone had and he would have had a much better career.
Interestingly, Saad had his two best seasons in Columbus and then was replaced by the much better Panarin so he doesn’t even get any love here. Meanwhile, Boone is seen as the kind of guy you would want for a deep Cup run, yet he has never had one.
I mostly know him as "not the guy I wanted from the 2013 Cup Winner" because he wasn't Nick Leddy.I know Saad was only here for, what, 2 years? 3 tops? But he was solid here. But he’s also one of the more forgettable “good” players in CBJ history.
I know him as the guy who missed a lot of breakaways and who was in the panarin deal.
I didn't even remember he scored 30 goals.Perhaps the quietest 30 Goal scorer in CBJ history?

He's going through waivers twice now, and won't have to later. Assuming he clears, tomorrow he'll be a free agent.I didn't even remember he scored 30 goals.
But seriously, what is the deal on this? If he does sign a league minimum deal somewhere to stay in the NHL instead of going to the AHL doesn't he have to pass through waivers?
I wasn't sure if the previous waivers were applicable any longer but I seem to recall previous instances of someone signing a new contract and needing to clear. He's going through waivers twice now, and won't have to later. Assuming he clears, tomorrow he'll be a free agent.
The best guess I'm seeing floating around is that he wants to sign a sweetheart deal with Bowman and trade some future salary in exchange for a shot at the cup.
Basically, it was probably passed around to the GMs that if they grabbed him, he'd quiet quit on them. Once he cleared, they announced the forthcoming termination; now no one will touch him. The Blues are now off the hook for his contract, official as of tomorrow. Sometime soon, he'll sign a contract with someone (*cough* Bowman *cough*), and they'll get a sweet deal to let him play out his twilight years at a steep discount (or perhaps for the same effective salary, but partially deferred to reduce the AAV) for a chance that his name gets on the cup.
Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong.
I've got to be honest- this situation comes up so rarely that I'm uncertain I fully understand it. Something about people rarely walking away from $5m future dollars or something...I can't imagine why that'd happen infrequentlyI wasn't sure if the previous waivers were applicable any longer but I seem to recall previous instances of someone signing a new contract and needing to clear.
The last contract termination I recall was Corey Perry and I guess he didn't have to clear after the Oilers signed him to his new contract after the Blackhawks terminated his prior deal.
