Two years of “competitive” sweeps for Carolina. Team probably needs some big changes

They just keep doing the same thing and sometimes it looks almost like they'll avoid rush chances in favor of cycle game. Leads to some impressive stats in zone time and shots for but maybe they should mix it up a bit more. It's a really taxing way to play when your gameplan is basically always to just work harder than the other team.

OTOH they made it to conference finals last year and then ran into a really hot goalie/team in Bob/FLA and now the same could be said of Shesterkin/NYR... making big changes just because of that could really backfire, maybe they just need a good signing or two, a bit more freedom for their best players and going a bit more aggressive for the rush when there's an opportunity.

I might be mistaken, but I think they haven't been spending anywhere close to the cap until now. I didn't find an easy way to check but I seem to remember shaking my head at it - a team with their window wide open sitting with 10M+ of free cap. This is the first year they actually went for any help at TDL. Ownership seems a bit frugal, they let Trocheck walk couple years ago and instead went for a cute play at Kotkaniemi that's really not working out, they basically lack a 2nd center capable of offense. Staal is a great shutdown guy but he should be a 3rd line specialist for that role at this point.
But now they have plenty of contracts expiring for guys they'll want to keep, so they might need some changes whether they want that or not.

Brind'Amur prefers hard always forcehking, simple hockey at a high tempo. That's why Carolina is struggling, it lacks creativity, the quantity of shots doesn't always equal quality. By the way, Bobrovsky was pretty lucky too, neither Boston (with the Bruins fatally failed goalie) nor Carolina are among the creative teams, and Toronto has a bad team composition, the "stars" can't carry their game with regular season to the PO. Vegas was "different coffee" as we say in Slovakia, that's why Bobrovsky didn't play as well as in previous rounds.

Before we write Carolina off, they're up against another blistering hot goalie this year just like last year with Bob. They've lost two games in OT against the Presidents cup winner. The Panarin goal last night was a seeing eye dog if there ever was. If I'm Carolina, do they need to improve? Yes, but it's hardly a major overhaul for a very, very good team

They may not have a choice in the matter. Half the team is UFA or an RFA who will be very pricey.

They’re a small market with an owner who likes to do things his way. They went against their usual style with their deadline moves and still didn’t win. There will be changes, probably big ones, for them.

They’ve tinkered around the edges but haven’t gotten it done. I realize you could argue they haven’t had “that guy” in net but yeah really they probably have to make a significant shift.

Boston can't get shots on net. i think Fla had more shots tonight than Bruins in last 2 games combined.

What I didn't like about the goalie interference call is the idea that Bennett's cross-check wasn't that "hard" .... I disagree. I think the Boston defender was doing his best to not fall into Swayman which would have played into it looking not as hard of a push. Bottom line for me was Swayman clearly didn't have a chance to slide over because of it.

The thing that makes the play tricky to call based on the rules is whether or not the defender could have made a play on the puck if he’s not shoved into/towards Swayman. I would think there’s a layer in there that’s not reviewable but it impacts the entire play. That said, the clips I read from the rule book suggest the entire play is reviewable and a penalty can be called for the cross check.

Suspension?

I know McDavid starts this whole shit but he got cross checked in the face. I think one is necessary

Of course he will because it's McDavid but he wasn't aiming for his face, the push from behind made him fall forward and down into a cross check aimed for the chest.
