I may be mistaken, but I believe the problem is that Allen has never evidenced the slightest interest in an NHL team.

The article seems to suggest otherwise.

“I never got the sense that Paul wasn’t interested in the NHL,†McGowan says. “Paul has always been interested in things that are good for Portland and the arena. It’s our job to bring opportunities to Paul. The NHL is just one of those. Our analysis led us to believe that potentially a team could work here. We were in the mix when it related to Portland as a potential option, but it didn’t work out, so it becomes moot.â€

Portland vs Seattle works so well in MLS. It would be great for the NHL as well.

While I'm not generally an advocate of taking somebody's team away, imagine this:
Portland and Seattle as expansion teams
Florida relocated to Quebec City.

Two 16 team conferences, One great new rivalry. Two if you count Quebec vs Montreal. Less travel down to Miami for all NHL teams.
I'd be just as happy if the Florida franchise became wildly popular in Miami (crappy pro sports town) and Quebec City didn't get a team.

Florida isn't going anywhere anytime soon. They've got an iron-clad lease that'll be lasting for some time, and the team's being operated as a loss-leader for a real estate deal in the area.

There will be no relocations.

I wouldn't copy anything the MLS does. That league has far more in common with WWE than the NHL.

Put teams in Portland and Seattle because they deserve teams, not because of some forced rivalry.

Out of curiosity what determines if a city deserves a team? Money? Fans demonstrating for a team? Lots of public ice skating? Large Candian population? Paul Allen?

I'm guessing that its fairly subjective and mostly in the mind of the NHL Board of Governors and Bettman. Money and a big arena would seem to be high on the list.

And since Portland and Seattle support various pro sports teams I don't think a decision to place teams there would be to establish a rivalry but it would seem to be a natural by-product.

Pretty good article on how to "Fix the NHL" (Can't say it's really broken). Can't say I agree with everything he said, but his draft position idea is intriguing. Feel like it would really have benefited this team in the past.

I don't like treating over glass delay of game like icing. Making it a judgement call would be the best way to handle it. Before the 04-05 lockout, defensemen had the ability to shoot it out to get a faceoff. I don't like the automatic 2:00 for delay as it is now. I know alot of fans won't like giving the ref discretion as to whether a puck was intentionally put out of play, but better than an automatic 2:00, and better than allowing the delay.

I do like the hybrid icing.

Totally agree with diving. Only penalize the diver, that will end diving.

I would rather see smaller goalie equipment, rather than larger nets. While talking about equipment, how about taking the armour out of shoulder and elbow pads, and we will see head shots slowly lessen, or at least not be so damaging.

Bring back wooden sticks:sarcasm:. If a composite stick can fold in two, make 'em a little stronger, yes I'm talking to you stick manufacturers.

No extra 2:00 for fighting with a visor. Instigator should be judgement call not automatic.

A combination of factors. Too many to list anyways.

But putting a team in a city because of a potential rivalry is realllllly stupid. It's stupid in this case, it's stupid in QCs case, just really dumb.

Why not add a team to Minneapolis? The rivalry with St. Paul would be intense!

Of all the places where I'd never expect to find relocation talk for someone else....you've got to be kidding me.

Whether our Canadian overlords decree that a particular city is worthy. This may change from week to week, or even from day to day.

Easy on the hyperbole. Just like in the States, there's some Canadians who have never left their backyard. They have no idea about any of the cities they regularly slag on HF about not deserving a hockey team.

That said, you sometimes take your quixotic mission of educating said posters a little too far...

With all due respect, that is completely absurd.

Until we hear NHL Team X saying phony baloney like "it's better for the league if Player Y goes to Market Z so we're not going to make a pass at him" like was said during the Dempsy saga, it's totally surd. :naughty:

I knew that comment wouldn't go over well with you. I would have moved Florida before I moved Atlanta (which was a great place to watch a game). And since MLS is being discussed, I don't think Miami should get a MLS franchise either (give it to Orlando).

Not any better.

This just about sums up the Jacket's past miseries

On a positive note UMberger, Mason, et al should quickly move out before the next edition is published in two or three years. Only Nash will remain.

Umberger's a center now? He had the two partial years (2008-09 and 2009-10), but that was quite a while ago.

And that's pretty damning anyway.

Spent the last week in Seattle...

It's blatantly obvious in spending a week in Seattle that the city is desperately ready for an NHL team. We spent Tuesday down at the waterfront, walking the piers and seeing the sights. I kid you not when I say that I saw at least 1,000 people wearing Blue Jays garb, a sure sign that the fans from just up the road in Canada made the trek down to see their team. So, there is always the thought that Seattle could be another kind of Buffalo - where the people who could be Leafs fans, but are alienated for whatever reason (be it ticket cost/availability, or just hatred of the local team), support the Sabres. The same thing could definitely happen here, where Canucks tickets are notably an arm and leg type of cost, and hard to come by.

Secondly, in the time I spent there, I saw no less than 13 different NHL teams represented by people walking around. Hats, jerseys, T-shirts, all ranging from the Canucks to the Bruins, Hawks, Devils, and even a lone guy sporting a New York Islanders shirt. To put that into perspective, I only saw one person wearing Seattle Thunderbirds stuff ... this is a city that is begging for professional hockey, and I think it could do well there.

Plus, I'd be able to make the trip over to see the Jackets, so there's always that ;)

i disagree...i loved watching games at phillips...if NHL would have done Atlanta like they did Pheonix, there'd still be a team there...the Atlanta Spirit Group has basically ruined Atlanta sports

Agreed. Phillips was a great place to see a game, and talk with some very knowledgeable hockey fans.
