Armchair GM Thread

I truly believe that if Hagens is on the board at 5, Nashville trades the pick for Barzal or for Dobson in a package deal.

I can't think of a worse move but I've been hearing a lot of smoke around the pick being moved.
Not buying it, this is all smoke from people who don't really know anything about the Preds.

Trotz has been trying for 2 years to get a top 5 pick, and now that he finally has one he is just going to throw it away? Doesn't line up with what he is trying to do.

Now I could totally see him trading the other picks for something else.

If anyone with even a tiny shred of credibility had mentioned Trotz might trade #5, there would be a thread on the main boards with 3,000 posts dunking on Trotz.

Anything can happen, but there's zero reason to believe it's remotely likely.

It's kind of tough to tell in that article if she's saying we'd be willing to trade our top five pick or one of our other picks. I agree with others that it just doesn't line up that Trotz would trade out of the top five after desperately trying to move up in the last two drafts. Could definitely see us trading a late first though. I suppose we'll know soon enough, but if we did trade this pick that really would be the final death knell of my interest in the team until Trotz is gone.

Preds traded Novak and Schenn (instantly flipped for a 2nd) for Bunting+4th. Philly trades a Novak type, a 2nd, and a 4th for Zegras. Apparently the difference in Zegras and Bunting is 2 4ths.

Have I mentioned Trotz is an awful GM yet?
Poehling scored at a better rate than Novak last year while being basically elite defensively and playing on the PK. I dont think Novak really had any value at all, but that could've been Brunette's fault.

Still, the Bunting trade did suck.

It's astonishing how much Cap space is out there, especially in relation to how weak the UFA crop is. Teams like Columbus, Anaheim, and San Jose have like $40M to spend. A few decent RFAs, but not huge ones.

All to say, it would be The Perfect Time to dump any inflated veteran contracts one might have laying around...

:banghead:

Why didn't we pay that price for Zegras? Too offensively gifted and most of all too young?
I suspect Zegras just doesn't have the character to ever be a cereal winner. And even our renowned leadership core here would not have been able to rehabilitate that poor lost soul. I doubt Trotz would have given up even a 4th round pick for Zegras. He probably preferred Haula anyway.
:help:

Likely the same reasons 30 other GMs also didn't. Or, as likely, Verbeek had a deal he liked the sound of (not sure why, but I digress) and didn't bother field other offers.
I think NHL GMs have been aware of Zegras' availability for quite a while, so if anybody was lining up to make better offers, they had lots of time.

Of course it probably also means Anaheim has a line on some huge UFA signings. With Joel Quenneville hired and almost $40M Cap space it has been expected they'll be going after a couple of the biggest UFAs, probably Ekblad, maybe Marner too. And this is probably well within the "collusion" window for teams lining up their contract announcements for July 1st. Maybe they already know who they have coming in and that made them more ready to firesale Zegras than previously. :dunno:

I figure a lot of GMs, not just Trotz, probably don't assess him much differently than Verbeek did. Upside is there, but right fit is more difficult and he has stalled/had injury issues/reluctant to develop as asked. He seems best employed as a sheltered 2C with PP time, but a lot of competitors are going to want more out of a 2C.
