Armchair GM Thread

Stay with the theme trotz.

The goal for this team for the upcoming off-season has to be getting a player like Sam Bennett, Evander Kane or Tom Wilson on the team.

Alright, I know it's easier said than done but I think as a team we're soft as marshmellows and watching the playoff this year has just underlined that fact. You have to be really physical, mean and borderline nasty in order to win. I mean for God's sake, the Oilers essentially took out the opposition's 1C last round and got a 2-minute penalty to show for it!

On an unrelated note, I also dislike the approach that we're trying to acquire guys who have already won it all, don't have the hunger anymore and are just after their retirement money. WE SHOULD BE AFTER THE GUYS WHO ARE GOING TO BE THE "NEXT ONES".

I don't know, getting a player like Bennett, Kane, or Wilson might be a bit superfluous to us, assuming we're not making the playoffs for a few years?

Again, it's finding the "next ones" that probably matters more. Like why some people might pick Martin super high in the draft. That might be a little more where we're at in terms of building for future playoff toughness? :dunno:

Our approach depends on whether Barry is stepping from his left foot to his right foot or vice versa. If we were building through young players, then we'd be looking at finding a bunch of "next ones". But we're also "in the win now window" and looking to sign a bunch of cereal winners to win the Cup right away.

Exactly. If Desnoyers is gone Martin should be our pick.

We all hate Tom Wilsons of the opposing teams, but want one of our own. We hate to see Perrys perrying, but those guys are truly valuable. We've had our lite versions, but to find a top6 capable pest would be awesome.

I don't want to see truly ugly plays, but as long as there's room for such players in the NHL I want one rather than to play against one.

Hopeful that Surin can fit that mold for us soon.

We've already got ZLH and added Bunting this past season. I like that they've reigned in ZLH but I'd like for them to loosen the strings on him and let him play on the edge more than he currently does. I agree that Surin could be a lot of fun to watch if he plays that way too.

I'd like to see us add some nasty on the blue line. I wish we had gone after Zadorov as opposed to Skjei.

As much as people like to bash on Lauzon, I feel like we missed his intensity and willingness to make contact with opposing players. I also think moving on from Sherwood was a mistake because of his nonstop motor. Guys like Cole Smith and McCarron don't strike fear into opponents.

Problem with Lauzon is his hitting often takes him out of plays. He hits for the sake of hitting rather than using it as a tool in his arsenal. If he could stop chasing hits and just use the opportunities that are given him I would agree with you. We also wouldn't all want to chunk him into the moon because his overall game would be better.

Also I don't think they reigned ZLH in, I think he did that on his own after getting suspended. It took him a while after that too get back to more of his game, and its simply because like a lot of players with that style of game it takes a bit to learn where the line is. Pretty much all of the guys listed earlier, including Bunting that now plays for us, took a bit to find that line. Until they do that they stay in trouble.

Is ZLH top 6? If not yet, do you see him as a top 6 in the long run?
No, and “probably not”?

It’s tough to say for 100% sure, because the Preds barely used him last season, and certainly not in positions where he had much opportunity to score. You wouldn’t want to take chances trying to score more as a young guy playing for our coaching staff either.

I could see him becoming a pesky 20-25 goal player in his better seasons if all goes well. That might qualify as “top 6” depending on the team, or what he’s bringing to a line outside of his scoring? It’s not impossible anyway.

Don’t expect it any time soon, however, since the Preds are notoriously bringing young forwards along verrrrrry slowly… dangerously slowly from a development perspective.

Perhaps he grows into a top 6 pest for us. I don't think Marchand looked like a top 6 forward when he entered the league. One can always dream  He definitely started out as an easily hated bottom 6 rat, but once he grew into the player he eventually became, it was harder to hate him. You could no longer say "well if he wasn't such a dirty pos he'd be out of the league". Dude could actually play.

I still don't think Lauzon on 3rd pair was really any kind of problem. The deterrence of physical play will always carry value.

That's just Fruit Loops. Trotz can say "Cheerio" if that's the case.

25 goals is usually considered middle 6

Only 83 forwards scored 25 or more goals this season. If strictly using goals scored as a measure for being a top 6 forward (independent of team affiliation), the lowest scoring "top 6" forward in the league had 15.

25 goals is decidedly a top 6, even fringe top line, forward in this league.
