Armchair GM Thread

I know this is voicing frustration, and many of us aren't far off...but realistically if this is where we are we may as well just press fast forward until the team gets moved or something. If we aren't trying to get better then what are we doing?

That's not an indictment against you, as I have noticed many of the comments lately from a growing portion of our fans are just drenched in apathy.
I don't think "apathy" is the right word. We care. It's more like "cynicism". :dunno:

If the Rossi rumor of value being a late 1st is accurate, are you making that deal, if the same rumor is also accurate on his 7x7 asking price? That 7x7 ask feels like a negotiating stance and I'd guess the real number is lower. The late 1st doesn't bother me a bit to be honest. The asking price is high, but the hope would be you have a good idea on wiggle room before you make the deal and feel confident you can sign him. What say you?
I obviously haven't been big on Rossi so wouldn't. The compensation isn't an issue, but taking the contract ask at face value that's a big commitment to a guy I'm not sold on holding this year's production level long-term. If he was a winger I'd probably feel differently. GMs be stupid and make dumb decisions, but I still struggle to believe the Wild would let him go easily/cheaply if he's the player we think/hope he is.

I have my doubts that the Wild would actually trade Rossi for only a late 1st, but if they would I'd be all over it. 7x7 feels like no issue either with the current and rising cap. Skeptical any of that is true though.

Trotz cannot blow this draft. With 3 1st’s and an early 2nd he has enormous opportunity for talent whether by picks or trades. That cannot be messed up. It’s a one time opportunity.
Just once Preds need a player from the draft that is ready for the NHL. Forget the AHL. Skip it. Put them in there.
True lots of players get better with AHL trainiing. How about some get worse? Play to their strengths and skills that get them to be 1st rounders and train the 2nds, 3rds, etc all.
How could some of these 1st round kids play worse than the Preds played last year?
Remember 3 1st’s and and early 2nd. That is a lot.

Expecting a player drafted at 5th overall to be ready for the NHL is unrealistic in almost any draft, and this isn't a particularly great draft.

Tbh a 5th overall pick should need limited time in the minors. If he needs extended time he probably shouldn't have been picked 5th overall. Guys that are really good spend little time there.

Forsberg was there half a season or so, Jones came straight in. Josi and Suter spent a couple of years between Swiss leagues/college/AHL and they were defensemen. Weber was a partial season in Milwaukee.

Basically if they are very good they may not come straight in but this over cooking stuff Trotz talk about is BS. If they need to be overcooked then they are probably bottom 6 players at best.

Spot on.

Coming straight into the NHL after being drafted at 18 yo isn't the same thing as needing time in the minors, though.

These guys are still 18. I think there is a realistic chance NOBODY from this year's draft, including Schaefer and Misa, can play right away in the NHL. And we're not getting Schaefer or Misa.

So, anybody we pick is almost certainly going back to a lesser league. It's not the same as logging time in the AHL, though. Actually Martone and Frondell might be the two most NHL-ready players, just based on physical development and lack of injury setbacks. But most of the other players are going back to their respective junior/NCAA leagues. This should not be thought of as any indictment whatsoever on their ultimate upsides as NHL players. They can play 2 more years in their leagues as juniors before the AHL opportunity even comes up. Indeed nobody we pick at #5 should ever play in the AHL. But that doesn't mean they will play in the NHL next season either.

I just read a Tennessean article that talked about trading Marchy. The idea was to get rid of the 4 years that remain from the big 5-year contract that Marchy signed.

It would be better if Trotz fired Brunette, who misuses his players IMHO!
We just really don't need to dump any contracts just for the sake of dumping them. This applies to Marchy, Stamkos, Saros, etc... We aren't in a cap crunch and we're already bad. Trade them if we can get value, keep them otherwise until we can.

This may not be popular but i would try to get rid off all and try to win the McKenna lottery. That guy will be the next Mcjesus.

So do what you can to be as bad as possible. Saros, Josi, Forsberg, Marchy, Stamkos, O'Reilly. Get rid of everyone and just get picks, prospects , young players etc.

Max retention for Stammer and Juice to get rid of them. It doesnt really matter because the team isn't going to win anything in the next 5 years.

I've seen it mentioned he prefers Montreal. Wonder if we could do a swap for Laine plus some token amount

We could get rid of everyone, be the worst team in history, and still only have a 25% chance of winning the lottery.

Coach is an idiot. He doesn't like it. Trotz throws weight behind coach. If we are keeping coach and Marchessault, things will only get worse in the lockeroom
Yeah I don't view that as a bad thing. I'm pretty sure if it gets worse it won't be just because of Marchessault, I'm pretty sure another few months like last season and Stamkos and ROR are going to be bigger problems.
