Armchair GM Thread

I don't do the the long rebuttals well, so I will try to keep it brief. Yes, there are a lot of players better than we currently have, and we should explore all of those options too. I think Rossi is a fit because he is a very talented offensive player that should still be ascending based on his age, seems to be out of favor with his current team, and is a better option than our own current long-term options. I think based on the long-term deal that Rossi is supposedly asking for might mean he could outlive Bruno and maybe even Trotz unless things dramatically change, so system to me is not as big of a deal. It really shouldn't be as big of a deal if they could formulate something to compliment their players, but at the end of the day we have a significant issue with straight up production from our forwards. He has shown to be productive, yes with good players, but yes also with bad players after Kaprizov was hurt for the back half. He did slump at the end of the season, then demoted, and then got saddled with the likes of the Trenins and Folignos to play with so shocker is production didn't bounce back. Again, I am not some Rossi freak, I simply think there is value in the player because teams will naturally dismiss him because of his size. I'm not Billy Bean, but if the kid is still improving and already shown to be capable of playing with good players at 23 that is a positive to me and worth exploring. I'm not breaking the bank for him, or moving heaven and earth for his rights.
You're good. I suck at brevity and my simple thoughts trend to paragraphs, etc.. I appreciate the thoughts even if I differ in assessment.

Where are people getting the idea Rossi is bad defensively? Because he’s small? General consensus seems to be he’s pretty responsible and the stats available seem to track with that
FO% is not great, and he seems to get more OZone starts so maybe that gives fuel to the offensively swayed player...which is probably true to a degree. That doesn't mean he is hemorrhaging goals though. His Corsi is alright.

Yeah I don’t mean to suggest he’s a defensive stalwart, but I don’t think I’d call him “poor” either.

Don't buy Trotz gives him that. Surely he's not THAT stupid.
All signs point to this being exactly something Trotz would do. Trotz seemingly still thinks we can compete next season, we're completely lacking in center depth, he's basically the ideal of the kind of player Trotz likes, and we've got the cap space to do it. I agree with Porter that the hardest thing is going to be convincing him to sign here, but he's never had a serious payday in his career and already has a Cup win with a second looking very likely. I could see him just going to the highest bidder at this point I could easily see that being us.

Trotz has to either trade or risk players on waivers to bury them in Milwaukee for there to be any significant change among the skater group. He hasn't shown he can do that intelligently yet.
Forsberg, Stamkos, Marchessault, O'Reilly, Bunting, Sission, Smith, Wood, Svechkov, McCarron, L'Heureux all under contract for next year ... Evangalista a RFA who likely gets signed. Josi, Skjei, Barron, Oesterle, Englund, Wilsby, Blankenburg on the blue line. Can't add without moving some bodies out.

Wood should be in Milwaukee. Pestered and England and Smith I am fine waiving. We can add without major surgery. Whether that is advisable…

Wood to Milwaukee is the only likely move. With Evangalista then extended we have maybe two spots if Bruno could be convinced to scratch Smith or McCarron. If Josi starts on LTIR, that gives a little wiggle room on the blue line but not much.

If history means anything, Wood, Svech, and ZLH could very likely all start the season in Milwaukee to make room for some veteran cannon fodder. We love to set back prospects and let them keep cooking in the fryer as the beeper chimes away into the void...

Oesterle and Wilsby are on 2-way contracts and Englund and Blankenburg are unlikely to be coveted pieces at initial cutdown time by anyone. So you got Lauzon, Skjei, and Barron(?), and Josi if he decides to risk more brain damage over chilling on LTIR. The defensive group looks to be more band aid than anything else.

seven NHL contract defenders, twelve NHL contract forwards in Milwaukee with players like Gibson and Molendyk moving to the pro level. Who leaves?

Hopefully all of our tweeners. McCarron and Smith should be easy cuts, Bellows even more. These are the players Trotz himself has said are dime a dozen. Sissons is too valuable now to cut (both by role and salary), but he's not far off. How many tweener D can we carry? Blankenburg and Oesterle are easy cuts. So lots of flexibility.

Bellows isn't under contract for next season. Between AHL only contracts and NHL contracts needing to go to Milwaukee there isn't much flexibility. That is the problem.

I don't think Barry is super attached to the bottom fillers on the roster. In fact, he sort of suggests that they are really the ones to blame for derailing an otherwise perfect plan.

Scary part is that Blankenburg was our best defenseman this year!
