I would do it as well. We're talking about a 23 year old center that was drafted 9th overall who has already hit 60 points. I might even offer more if need be. Rossi and who we pick at 5 could be our 1-2 punch for years

It will be poetic in a way. Buyout Duchene and bring in winners only for Duchene to go out and become a winner while who we brought on become whiners as this system sucks

I'm sure Marchand is one 5'9" guy Trotz would take. He is cereal personified. Probably more like 4x$9M though, he is 37 already.Marchand is UFA and would take a 7x7 deal.

I don't understand fascination with Rossi. Small center who is fairly useless in playoffs. Wild been desperate for top 6 center and have no faith in him. Why would we want him?

Wild wants to sign him but he turned down their contract offer and he has complained how he's being used. Sounds like rossi is the one who wants to move and the possibility of him getting offered sheeted and them not getting a player that can help now has them looking at trade possibilities. That small center had 60 points as a 23 year old

He doesn't belong to us, he had a good season, his future with his current team is iffy. Not much more to it. We like to do this with every player in a similar situation with anything resembling offensive upside. A 5'9" center that is subpar defensively would be a disaster on a Trotz roster

He's 23 and a center, and we need young players and are awful at center looking ahead. He just scored 20+ goals and 60 points on a pretty low scoring team, and his underlying numbers are very good offensively and fine defensively. I'm not sure how one decides he's "fairly useless" in the playoffs based on six games. I don't see how the team shouldn't be interested in him. Just because he's not a savior doesn't mean this team couldn't use a good young player.
The biggest argument I can see against him is that he's not as good without Kaprizov (few players would be). Still, feels like letting perfect be the enemy of good here unless the price is exorbitant.

All comes down to price. We aren't exactly loaded at center, especially young ones. Worrying about a young guys playoff performance when we can't even make the playoffs seems a bit picky imo.

The real downside is he's too young.
In our system, he'd have to clear waivers and get deep fried in Milwaukee.

I think once you add it all up, acquiring Rossi doesn't make much sense for us. First, there's the acquisition cost. We'd have to trade some very good assets, like a 1st round pick (except it can't be our own ones for 2025/26/27), plus one of our absolute best prospects (basically whoever Minnesota covets most on our list), plus maybe something else, just to match the market offers they'll get. THEN we'd have to pay the guy. 60 pts is good production and probably worth $7Mish on a long-term deal these days, although it'd end up being a contentious negotiation probably because Rossi has shown he's not afraid to make noise about his situation, and Trotz would probably seek a lesser bridge deal while the youngster proved himself, so I'm sure that negotiation wouldn't go well. And then to top it all off... he'll face the uphill battle of getting icetime - particularly at center - for a smaller/softer type of young player. He's not physical, he's not great on faceoffs. He's going to get bumped from center as long as this coach we have is making the call. So what happens when he gets 30 or 40 points instead of 60, what happens when he starts getting injured like Arvy due to his stature, etc, and all especially if we have him signed to a larger contract?
I like Rossi, I like it when a smaller talented player beats the odds and sticks, but even I don't see the math working out with him here once you take all those factors into consideration. And that's me, somebody who is neutral/positive about Rossi as an NHL player in isolation. I don't think Trotz would even bother to think about it, tbh.
I wonder what Trotz thinks about some of his former Islanders players. That sounds like a franchise which might be looking to shake some things up, whether it be with veteran longer term contracts (Barzal, Mayfield), soon-to-be expiring rental players (Lee), or UFAs like traded-to-Avs Brock Nelson, Kyle Palmeiri. He hasn't gone too much that way so far, I guess he signed Bellows and picked up Beauvillier as players he knew from the Isles days. But as he said himself, once he likes a guy he likes him forever. So I'd wonder more about some of those names than Rossi?

I'm already preparing myself for us to massively overpay Sam Bennett. Which I actually do like him as a player but he's definitely not going to be worth whatever he gets especially if the Panthers repeat and he gets the Conn Smythe.

I suspect Sam Bennet is going to get Massive Overpayment offers from A LOT of teams, given the current league-wide Cap situation. What makes him choose us? I would be shocked if we ended up as the winning bid.
Which is probably good. As you say, he's a good player and I like him. But it's ok to dodge a bullet on an enormous UFA contract "win" sometimes. We're not the Destination Of Choice we used to be. That has mostly "cons"... but occasionally I guess a few "pros"?
Let's build smart instead.No idea if Rossi has any possibility of being here, but us snubbing our nose at Rossi is like the guy walking to work refusing a vehicle because he's holding out for a Lexus. It is out of touch with our current situation to not look at any and all possibilities of young players, specifically center, to improve the team.

Cost and usage are an unknown argument that can't be proven at this point, so I have no issues with that, but to say no interest in the player or call him useless for this team is confusing to say the least. I'm not some big Rossi fan either, but we have nobody in our current system that looks to be at his level even if he's a short 2C. I guess you can argue Svech could get there, but he isn't there yet and has a ways to go to hit Rossi's already proven level.I don't snub my nose at Rossi in general... No interest in Rossi. He's not some world-beater that's going to excel in the playoffs. While he'd add talent to a roster in sore need of it, I'd prefer to see what comes of Svechkov, Edstrom and Surin and one of them becoming a 2C and hopefully having the ability to draft a 1C this draft. With that said, I'd really like to improve our defensemen pool as only Molendyk and Gibson have any top 4 potential. I like Wilsby and Stastney but injury concerns, their age and lack of size also give me pause in them being long term solutions.

My main problem with Rossi is that he looks too much like Steve Buscemi.

There are a lot of players out there better than what we have, but there should be some method to who we are adding on. What is it about Rossi that you like as a fit for this team? I think he's an undersized center tha plays small and isn''t good on the defensive end of the puck. I am also wary of how much of his production jump this season came as a result of playing with guys like Kaprizov and Boldy. I don't really see him as a center fit for a Trotz/Brunette team where the trend seems to want a fairly defined top 6 and bottom 6 as I think he would get overmatched helming a second line against other Western Conference opponents (much like a Novak, Turris, etc..).
I don't do the the long rebuttals well, so I will try to keep it brief. Yes, there are a lot of players better than we currently have, and we should explore all of those options too. I think Rossi is a fit because he is a very talented offensive player that should still be ascending based on his age, seems to be out of favor with his current team, and is a better option than our own current long-term options. I think based on the long-term deal that Rossi is supposedly asking for might mean he could outlive Bruno and maybe even Trotz unless things dramatically change, so system to me is not as big of a deal. It really shouldn't be as big of a deal if they could formulate something to compliment their players, but at the end of the day we have a significant issue with straight up production from our forwards. He has shown to be productive, yes with good players, but yes also with bad players after Kaprizov was hurt for the back half. He did slump at the end of the season, then demoted, and then got saddled with the likes of the Trenins and Folignos to play with so shocker is production didn't bounce back. Again, I am not some Rossi freak, I simply think there is value in the player because teams will naturally dismiss him because of his size. I'm not Billy Bean, but if the kid is still improving and already shown to be capable of playing with good players at 23 that is a positive to me and worth exploring. I'm not breaking the bank for him, or moving heaven and earth for his rights.
