There's a lot of ways to take the original question.

Will Trotz be interested in adding Marner? Who knows! Does he like him? If so, he'll be in the bidding for sure.

Is Marner a really good player? Sure.

Is Marner a player that can put a team on his back in the playoffs and dominate games? No.

Do you think it's in the Preds interests to go after Marner this offseason? My answer remains: No. None of the above answers or angles on the question withstanding. The short of it is that this team is a train wreck. Adding Marner might help us go up from 30th best to ... whatever. Rose colored glasses, maybe we make a WC spot and get swept in the first round. But as far as team construction, he doesn't move the needle to contender by himself. And the Preds are now at the lowest point they've been since they first started as an expansion team. By the time we get the GM and coach to clear out of here, get rid of the retirement home contracts, get young talent and develop it properly, Marner could be retired himself. Finally, we don't need a big signing to reach the cap floor, and why would he want to come here?

FWIW, there were rumours that Trotz tried to acquire him in the 2024 Trade Deadline. ROR gave his recommendation.

I also believe and have heard ROR and Marner were close during ROR's short stint in TOR. I can't shake the feeling that one of the reasons for keeping ROR was to entice Marner to come to Nashville.

And, for what I've heard Marner's after the money at this point. I'll all but guarantee you that he's going to sign in a no-state tax team. We can afford him, we are a low-pressure environment and there's other stars in our team (is there really, though?) that you could realistically pitch him the scenario that we turn this around QUICK.
 
Marner would just add to the hilarity that is dumping Duchene because of his "retirement" contract only to add 3 guys that basically only came for the pay day.

Don't get me wrong though, playoff performer thus far or no, you get a Marner, you take it.

With the high pick you hope to get someone as good as Marner. I don’t think you refrain from signing him because he improves you.

EF speculated on 32 Thoughts today that Marchessaukt to Toronto makes a lot of sense. They need some of his fire.

On Marner, I think he signs at a low media intensity market. He is Toronto kid and he seems really tired of feeling weight of that. Coming to Nashville or Utah or another place with less demand on him would likely be extremely appealing, money aside.

What does TOR have to offer?

Marner can sign with any team with the cap increasing making room to pay the guy is much easier. And while the tax point is a consideration it does not outweigh going to a cup competitive team. Any player the chance for success is at least as important than the payday. This eliminates Nashville from a Marner destination. This roster is about as far from being cup competitive as it could be. It's nice to dream but reality will set in.

Exactly what I'm afraid of. While I wouldn't do it, because it's shortsighted and will set the team back further ... I can easily see Trotz thinking he's only one player away. I mean everything he's done so far has been, in his own final analysis, perfect.

He was 5th in TOI among their forwards, 5th in PP time, spent 40% of his time with a combo of Boldy, Zuccarello, Kaprizov, and another almost 20% with a mix of Boldy, Kaprizov, Johansson, Hartman, and Foligno. I'm sure there are quirks and weird stretches, it's Hynes after all, but there's nothing egregious there. Sounds entitled. Probably pissed he wasn't stapled to Kaprizov and PP1 more to bloat his numbers for a bigger extension.
 
If you (Preds) want to succeed then sometimes you have to do what teams like the FL Panthers did and go out and get a Matthew Tkachuk. The Panthers in '22 traded Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt AND draft picks! How many of us thought the Panthers were off there rockers for this trade! Look at them now. Then went out and got Marchand and Jones a this TDL. Their team is amazing! Clicking at the right time with Bob hitting his stride.

I don't think many people did, most were surprised that is what Calgary accepted. Everyone assumed that Huberdeau's points were a product of the team.

The Tkachuk trade was obviously huge but Florida's success is the result of a bunch of moves that have all worked out very well for them. For me looking at Florida it's a sign of what happens when you have the GM, coach, and players all on the same page of what they want to be as a team and working together to achieve that goal. We unfortunately don't seem to have that at all.

Tkachuk was the final piece. Other shrewd moves were acquiring the two Sam's, signing Verhaege, Rodrigues and Bob as FA's, and countless other moves. The Tkachuk trade put them over the top for sure. It gave them two legit top lines, a third line that is playoff ready. They added quality depth defensemen and when they lost OEL and Montour this past offseason, they went out and added Jones once they realized they needed another piece to make it work.

The comments Jones made about his teammates say a lot about the types of players they've acquired and the culture they have. It all starts with their best player and captain and trickles down to the rest of the roster.
