Armchair GM Thread

Wouldn't surprise me that over the next few years Vegas' lack of prospects due to all of the trading doesn't start showing up. Trading like they have is great, as long as they end up being good trades and you don't start losing those guys to injuries, age, etc.

I could be completely wrong, but I expect them to be a 1st/2nd round exit team for several years until they either get some picks/prospects back or they just decide they need to completely reload.
Being aggressive/borderline-insane on handling players/Bold Trades/Cap/LTIR/UFA has certainly been something that worked for them in the past. I'm not sure that will hold up, since now more teams have more Cap, so the UFA market will diminish, and "hijinx" types of moves might become more difficult since everybody has more flexibility? I don't know, but anyway, still -very grudgingly- "kudos to them" I guess for making it work while it lasted. And f-them at the same time. :sarcasm:

If they have to keep signing their 3rd pair guys like Hague for $5M, I guess that could help hasten their demise. I'm all for that too. Plus some of the big guys they went after are getting older. Stone, Pietrangelo, Hertl are just going to keep drifting to the right on the age scale, it's not always going to be the same on those big gets as it was in the early days.

Yeah, they COULD for sure match Hague but he would still be their number 5 defenseman. At 5 mil, they could take the 2nd rounder (a high one) and just walk away.

They're also an attractive destination for UFAs, so they probably have a better shot at signing an equivalent replacement cheaper than we could. It's not a great slate of UFA D this summer, but for example they could probably give themselves some long-term Cap flexibility by just patching in veteran 3rd-pair guys (like a Brian Dumoulin this year, say) on cheaper short-term contracts. And pocket that 2nd round pick in the process. Without losing anything at all in terms of competitive edge. So yeah.

I figure after this post season Vegas will be looking to make some changes. They made it to the 2nd round but really shouldn't have, and frankly just felt out matched by the Oilers.

Frankly the Oilers just blow my mind in the post season. When you look at that team they don't appear to have the Dcorp, Forward depth, nor Goalie to beat anyone, but once they get going it seems to work. Now part of that may be that LA and Vegas have major flaws and they may run headlong into Dallas and suddenly get stomped but I guess we will be finding that out soon too.

I suspect some of the same. That entire division looks pretty cooked top to bottom. Like you said, Vegas struggled a good bit to get past the 5th best team in our division.

The old schoolers lol let's do it
