Speculation: Armchair GM - 2025 Offseason Thread

Two potential targets that we could maybe ask about is Vegas’ Zach Whitecloud or Nic Hague.

The knights only have about 10 mill in space (rounding up), and have Jack Eichel expiring after next year. They’ll need money to sign him, and fill in some of their depth (currently expected to lose Smith, Saad, Olofsson, etc). And obviously they have to do a big splash almost every offseason.

Hague will be an RFA with arb rights this summer.

I could imagine they'd be more willing to move Hague, who needs a new contract and is coming off a relatively poor season (at least analytically). But I don't know if he's strictly a bottom pair stopper or if we can put him in harder minutes. He's played some harder minutes at times in Vegas but it's a very structured team so I wonder if he could do that here.

Obviously we'd prefer an RD but I don't see them moving Whitecloud, who is on a very good contract for what he does for them.

Adin Hill seems to be underperforming for Vegas right now. Do they look for a goalie swap? I wouldn't take his contract though now that I see it.

In a league where all contracts are guaranteed (unlike the NFL) its not as easy to get rid of people and the buyout penalties are crippling in many circumstances.

Severson's buyout would hurt this team for a decade+. Elvis is not as bad and better than last year where a buyout was crippling but you also have to ask yourself if there is a better option out there where we can be better next season AND not worry about the lost cap room in years 3-4.

We have over 65 million in cap space available next year before resigning anybody that needs it. We may not NEED to buy anyone out.
For the record, I do not advocate a buyout of Severson. If he's to be moved, it would be through trade, one way or another. Elvis... could be a buyout candidate, but I'd prefer retention for two years. I don't think we'll be pushed on any Cap issues for at least two years. That said, he could be buried in the minors given our Cap space. not ideal to pay the NHL salary (and still counts against Cap for the most part), but if they felt they needed that change and couldn't move him, I have no issue sending him through waivers.

Again, my comment was my own personal disappointment as I think running this back is not a step forward even with the improvement from Elvis. I have no faith in Severson to find consistency and eliminate the big mistakes - which, yes, I realize I see more than the good plays he certainly makes. The mistakes are critical and huge impacts to this team. The good simply hasn't made up for it and the sign wave consistency is a killer.

If he comes to Columbus will he have to change his name to Graycloud to fit in? Not many white clouds in Columbus but we do have plenty of dreary gray clouds.
That is so not true. Evidently we want to bring our fandom to cloud-dom too? I mean, sure we have some awful days in winter, but when there are clouds, they tend to be beautifully set against that blue background we call sky. Or is the sky falling too? I mean come on...what are we talking about here? :D

Marner will probably want out of Toronto if the Laffs pull the reverse sweep.

The big question is: do you really want him?

Ehhhhhhhhhhh....probably not at the price tag hes asking for.

That's being said lets not jinx it just yet, the leafs do an amazing job of that already on their own and I personally am just praying whatever karma I have on hand for it to happen.

Just read that Carolina as been in the playoffs 7 straight years. I think I trust him to do right by the Jackets.

As I watch the playoffs these thoughts pop into my head:

Do the Jackets have an inspirational leader like a Tkachuk or a Wilson?

Other than Olivier where is the physicality needed to win a Cup? (Gudbrandson, I guess but he is short term)

Can the young forwards learn how to be 2 way players?

I'd like to see GMDW add some fire and grit during the off season. Who & how I have no idea but we need some.

Wondering this as well. Fantilli might get there but isn’t there yet. Lindstrom was drafted for that reason but has the back issue. Elick was drafted for that issue but didn’t take a step forward. Do Voronkov and Marchenko have another level we haven’t seen yet?

To be fair Dallas, Edmonton, Carolina and Tampa were the 4 bottom teams in terms of hits this year in the regular season. Colorado, Vegas and Washington were also in the bottom 9.

I want more assholes on this team for sure and clearly Don understands we need an edge for that time of year but at the same time there are a lot of guys I don't worry about in that atmosphere. I see Marchenko brought up, no he's not going to turn into prime Lindros but we also just watched the man play through a broken jaw while coming back pretty quickly and that stuff matters too

Young important guys with size:
Voronkov 6’5” 227 lbs
Marchenko 6’3” 197 lbs
Fantilli 6’2” 199 lbs
Chinakhov 6’1” 201 lbs
Sillinger 6’1” 202 lbs

Old important guys with size
Olivier 6’1” 226 lbs
Jenner 6’2” 203 lbs
Monahan 6’2” 197 lbs
Werenski 6’2” 211 lbs
Severson 6’2 204 lbs

When I look at this list I think it would be great if one of Voronkov/Marchenko had a nastier edge and Severson really needs to throw more hits. Or we need to add something.

Fun fact - in 30 games Chinakhov had 47 hits. Severson had 43 hits in 70 games. Hits are just a proxy for toughness, I know.

I never really considered Severson a tough guy despite his size and maybe Chinakov should hit less in the future with his ongoing back issues.

I have been on the fence about bringing him back and a couple posters have taken me to task for it, but Danforth totally tracks as a guy who will hold up to the physical play of the playoffs and willingly engage in it.

We probably need to bring in someone with some playoff success. The 3 guys with the most playoff games on the team might all be gone:

JVR 82 games including losing the Cup with Philadelphia in 2010
Jack Johnson 57 games including winning the Cup with the Avalanche in 2022
Sean Kuraly 57 games including losing the Cup with Boston in 2019

Could see making a trade and getting his rights. A winger ready to step in to the NHL and very young.

Hellebuyck has a modified no trade deal which allows for him being traded to 10 teams starting in 27-28. Can't imagine that both he and the Jets wouldn't consider something after this season's playoff disaster-his third horrid playoff in a row.

Assuming (a large assumption I understand) that he'd waive his current NTC and come to Columbus, would you take him? A high risk gamble come playoff time for sure. Possibly even high risk regular season gamble after this season's playoff fiasco.

I'd be inclined to roll the dice and go for it-depending on the cost. High risk high return potential. The CBJ cap room allows for taking such a gamble.

Yes I’d take him but there’s no chance they’d do it, even if he submarines their season.

As you start thinking about contracts in the future, Matt Coronato just signed for 7 x $6.5 million. We have two guys who were drafted ahead of him in 2021 - KJ and Sillinger. KJ is a bargain at $1.8 million cap hit for the next two years.

The ol' "you can pay me later" trick is going to come around for us.

Days after signing a three-year, $5.4 million contract that will take the talented young forward through ages 22 through 24 in a CBJ uniform, he told BlueJackets.com he wants to not only live up to his deal but surpass it.

“(I want to be underpaid) even right away, I think,” Johnson said. “When I was looking at a one-year vs. three, I think I won’t be too unhappy in my life if I overperform this contract by a lot. I don’t think there will be any regrets. I feel really lucky and blessed about it. I won’t be regretting it even if I am underpaid.

“That’s exactly the goal, to be way underpaid, hopefully.”
