Brick by Brick
Zero chance they bring him back, although we do need a net parker like him. He's just too slow.
Not if they go scortched earth and four 1sts or something a little more palatable of a 1st and 3rd. There are options without the 2nd and getting the 2nd back doesn't assure you of getting a player on an offer sheet. It would be a huge risk and waste of assets in my opinion. That is...if we're getting our 2nd just to OS someone (that can be matched by the original team). I'm all for an OS, but not fot spending assets to get the 2nd back just to hope to do it.If we're going to OS someone we will need to reacquire our 2nd that we sent to Montreal to dump Laine
Slow but 16 goals and veteran leadership that needs replaced. I think his biggest asset was his locker room presence even though he didn't wear a letter.Zero chance they bring him back, although we do need a net parker like him. He's just too slow.
Given the state of the Bruins, my target would be Charlie McAvoy. He and Z on the top pair and Fabbro and Mateychuk on the 2nd pair would be a huge upgrade and a very high end top 4. I have to believe Boston could be considering a rebuild. He's coming off injury but is signed through 2030 and is only 27. Fits the core, fits the need and I have to think CBJ has assets to land him with our picks and prospects. That's a guy I would include a player like Chinakhov for (although being honest, I'm a big Chinakhov fan, but the best ability is availability and he's not been able to stay healthy - also a snag to the deal I suspect). So a lot of assets going for one guy who needs significant offensive minutes and PP time? Are we trading Werenski or Mateychuk to make space? (obviously not).
We should be targeting the best possible D who don't need offensive deployment and PP time. Pelech is my target on the Islanders. His trade cost might be quite low as well. If folks can identify an RD of that caliber (sadly Pulock is not?) that would be even better.
It could also imply the cost to acquire players is high right now and they could prefer to have Provorov vs being left with no additions. Might explain why he hasn't been in a rush to sign the player and it's almost a case I'll do it but I'm going to look elsewhere first.I think offering Provorov a long-term deal (>3 years) now should imply at least one of the following:
a) Waddell is not convinced Mateychuk will be a real top-4 D on a contender, maybe not even a core piece
b) Waddell is not convinced Fabbro will be a long-term top-4 D
c) Waddell's view on how to build a strong and balanced d-core differs a lot from my view
I don't think we're ever going to have much success with 2nd D pair of Mateychuk-Provorov, even if Werenski's partner was a total package. The top-4 lacks a guy with size, long wingspan and brilliant defensive IQ. A defenseman who can kill the opponent's cycle quicker than either of those two and also move the puck at least almost as efficiently as they do. Handedness of the player isn't that relevant to me, especially if he's capable of playing on his off-side (Gavrikov for example).
So no, I don't think Pionk, Rasmussen or Dobson are the type of D we really need. Gavrikov however feels like an obvious target, maybe Pelech and K'Andre Miller too.
I would like to see a similar type rangier D in our bottom pair in not too distant future. Maybe we already have someone in the system who will fill that role (Richard, MacDonald, Hunt...?) eventually but will any of them be ready once Gudbranson leaves? Maybe a stopgap will be needed. Or a promising D prospect from another organisation (I have used LDs Ethan Del Mastro and Tyson Hinds as examples before, can't think of an RD equivalent right now).
And as a small side comment regarding the defense, I'm going to repeat what I've said many times before: I think Mateychuk's puckhandling still needs work, I honestly cannot think of an aspect or weakness that's holding him back developmentally more than that. This year I've heard comparisons to Werenski from CBJ reporters but I don't like that because I see a clear difference in speed and ability to pick up pucks off the boards and clearing or giving an easy pass to a teammate, dangling, shot release etc. Hopefully his puck skills will get better with training and improved skating ability but seriously should also consider experimenting with different sticks like Werenski did.

I don't like to make sepculative trade offers so I'll just point to our asset pool that would be enticing and could still offer a roster player. Maybe even off set the cost with inclusion of Severson but increase the asset take.
here's where i see things heading into the offseason
offseason template:
- primary needs:
- one top four defenseman (ideally RH)
- top six F (ideally RH)
- veteran goalie
- secondary needs:
- at least one additional defenseman (ideally good on the PK)
- middle six wing (either pacey forechecker or savvy play-connector)
this isn't the best application of that template, but just as an example:
- address primary needs with:
- one big FA signing
- one big trade
- one short-term FA signing
- address secondary needs with:
- low-cost change-of-scenery trade (s)
- above-market AAV short-term UFA signing(s)
- re-signings:
- dante fabbro - 4.75x4
- justin danforth – 2x2
- dmitry voronkov – 5.5x3
- trades
- noah dobson in exchange for cole sillinger, luca marrelli, MIN 2025 1st and CBJ 2026 1st (top-5 prot.)
- nils hoglander for damon severson + assorted future picks (assuming VAN struggles to sign willander and/or trades his rights for a forward)
- matt dumba for a late-round pick
- UFA haul
- RW brock boeser – a younger, up-leveled version of what JVR brought this year, great in the room, good play-connector, elite shot, elite netfront PP guy.
- LD dmitry orlov – two-year deal at above market AAV – would be insurance in case mateychuk struggles, helps the PK, and can play up as needed. is a guy who waddell has a history with
- G jake allen – timeshare in net with jet
- C/RW nick bjugstad – short-term deal at above-market AAV – can reinforce the identity line, win face-offs, etc.
- other moves:
- buyout elvis, trade chinakhov for a couple picks (unpopular, but clearly the FO is ready to move on)
lines:
voronkov - monahan - marchenkojohnson - fantilli - boeserhoglander - jenner - olivierZAR - bjugstad - danforthwerenski - fabbromateychuk - dobsonorlov - dumbaallengreaves
boeser isn't my top choice, but feels realistic and fits their needs relatively well. these lines fit dean's MO as they'd have two clear scoring lines and two clear shutdown lines, both of which would be up-leveled from last season.
i do think there's going to be a market for severson – vancouver was connected to him earlier and marcus pettersson would be an ideal partner for him. maybe i'm shooting too high on the hoglander return, but the jackets were connected to him earlier this season.
will probably get some pushback on the dobson idea, but imo he and mateychuk would be a very nice pair in the long run. dobson may not be the pure shutdown type many here want, but mateychuk has a lot of gus forsling in his game and they'd be the cbj answer to what florida had in forsling-montour for a while, or perhaps a rebuilt version of the werenski-jones pair of yesteryear.
i really like the idea of flexing their short-term cap space to build an effective veteran pair around orlov and dumba. would help some of their PK woes and take the pressure off of mateychuk. in fact, orlov could play with dobson if they want to let denton cut loose in sheltered minutes.
they'd still have some cap to play around with – a reunion with nyquist (bumping hoglander or olivier down to the fourth line) would also make a lot of sense. he'd be a good PP2 bumper and help in the room and on the PK.
Internally it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that LDBB is competing for a spot next season if he isn't moved in a bigger dealI wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Kuraly, Danforth and/or JVR to return. There is likely 4 or more spots to fill up front. Without assuming moving any players under contract here's what I think we have coming back on guaranteed NHL contracts (no particular order):
Forwards:
Monahan
Fantilli
Marchenko
Voronkov
Chinakhov
Sillinger
Jenner
Johnson
Olivier
ZAR
Unsigned: Danforth, Kuraly, JVR, (the others I see no way of returning)
All three represent veteran leadership and none of them would be a high cost player to retain. I think Kuraly is the most likely, but I could see any one or two returning. I wouldn't expect all three. They can keep 14 forwards and all three of these guys (and ZAR) could be considered in your "extra forward" group, but can play a role and be a leader. IN addition, it's unlikely everyone under contract returns as well.
Just some food for thought.
Provorov has been playing on his off-side because Severson has consistently underperformed, and Mateychuk was elevated to a pair higher than he’s probably ready for — ideally, he should be on the third pair for at least another season. Our 2nd pair Mateychuk-Provorov 537 minutes together xGoals% 42%, xGoals for per 60 = 1.91 and xGoals against per 60 = 2.64.
So basically a negative d-pair.
Just something to think about.
The trade market might have a few options, but they’ll come at a steep price.
I was watching a Caps game and they listed all of the players who had career seasons this year and the list was lengthy. They'll still be good, but I think they're passable.Completely agree. We can be pretty sure they won't take another step up front like they did this year. They should still improve, but the reality (in my opinion) is the offensive ability on this team is quite good. If the GAA comes down even further next year and the offense stays at the same level or improves even slightly...that's a playoff team and one that likely can push some clubs. The defense and overall defending will need to improve and the goaltending needs to be better than average. Maybe Jet is part of the answer, but not something I am ready to hang my hat on...yet.
Even minor improvement could have this team looking at a Metro title. I think NJD is the biggest obstacle but none of the other teams scare me at this point - and I don't think the Caps maintain this level of play. Not counting on it, but seems more likely than not after watching this team rebound late in the year under pressure.
I don’t think Chatfield is a realistic option. He’s only in the first year of a three-year deal at $3 million per season, and for a cost-controlled top-4 RD, that’s exactly the kind of player teams hold onto.Carolina is interesting. They have Brent Burns on their top pair. Sean Walker and Jalen Chatfield are both sort of 2nd pair right Ds. Scott Morrow is probably ready for the NHL. Walker just completed the first year of a five year contract. Burns is signed for another season. Chatfield is a more defensive minded guy who is my new Matt Roy - unappreciated solid right D that would help the Jackets. He kills penalties. I make a decent offer for him. Not one that will kill us but one that is a win for both teams. LDBB? A first and Marrelli?
Werenski - Fabbro
Mateychuk- Chatfield
free agent LD with size / Hunt - Severson / Gudbranson
Part of me thinks we will make 1 major move (maybe a veteran forward who does good zone entries) and a couple of smaller moves and try to keep the team pretty much intact. Chatfield fits

I think both are highly unlikelyYes but they have Morrow ready to go. And he is also cost controlled. I wanted Morrow in his draft year. i would trade for him if possible, but I think that is less likely.
I think both are highly unlikely
When referring to league average for our goalies; to me that sounds like middle of the pack and mediocre. We have to do a lot better than that. This team improved defensively but there are some glaring issues that it will be interesting to see how GMDW resolves. Offensively it was pretty good.
Our goalies have to be near the top of the list for needing improvement. Elvis sv% was .892, tarasov .881, and jet. 938.
There's no way jet can sustain that and goalies are fickle but it seems the ship has sailed on the other two.
The team avg sv% was .903 (thanks to jet) which is a hair higher than league avg this year, but that really does not account for situational changes (backups vs starters, etc). We allowed 254 goals against. If all the goalies played to league avg, that would drop to 244. If we use team avg then it's 235.
That alone likely gets this team into the playoffs.
Other personnel changes are likely but this team is well positioned.
Jenner/Voronkov- Monahan - Marchy
JVR (UFA) - Fantilli - KJ
Jenner/Voronkov - Sillinger - Olivier
ZAR - Danforth - whoever
And finding a spot if Chinakov can get healthy (yes please). That's a dangerous team.
Defense is certainly messier. I'd love to get a 1RD and sign Fabbro to play with Mateychuk but that may be a luxury. If you have a LD depth chart of Werenski - Mateychuk - Provorov you don't have a shutdown but you do have options. As others have pointed out, something has to push with Severson and gudbranson but both looked improved at the end of the year. Basically, I have no idea what they'll do for our D.
It will be an interesting summer regardless, should be fun to watch (unless they don't fix the goalies lol)
I would argue that LDBB may be better than Silly as a 3rd line centerInternally it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that LDBB is competing for a spot next season if he isn't moved in a bigger deal
