Armchair GM - 2025 Offseason Thread

#1 issue is Right D. I go big game hunting. I am willing to make the big trade for a top right D. But if that fails I look for a guy like Jalen Chatfield of the Canes. I’d overpay for him. I hope our NHL scouts have really been analyzing other teams’ second and third right Ds looking for a solid 2RD for us.
With Jet looking like a viable 1B for a potential tandem next year this is my biggest priority right now (outside some coaching changes). We need someone that can play along side Z or Mateychuk. I am sure Fabbro gets resigned but there is still a glaring hole there since Jiricek bombed out for us and Severson isn't the guy to do it.

I don't think he had the best season (aka it was rough) which may be the reason he could be available but Andersson feels like a potential target.

Weegar I'd kill for. I watched that Mooshead team as someone from NS and saw them win the Mem Cup in person and never believed he would be much in the NHL... Boy was I wrong

Edit: To my credit I didn't believe in Frk or Drouin

I'd really like to see Fabbro re-signed and still would like to see a RHD to play with Z. I know Fabbro did it and can do it, but I think a cup winning team would have him in the 2nd pair and make that top 4 extremely strong. Could spread minutes if you can allow Fabbro to allow Mateychuk to open up like Z did this year. Can continue to improve the 3rd pair with Guddy and from within.

Also hoping for a partner for Jet so we have a solid tandem that can allow either the hot hand to play or a consistent split of time. I haven't looked at the UFA goalie market but would hope the NHL scouts are looking across the league as well as the UFA market. I think we need two Vets. One for the NHL club and a #3 that can slide down to Cleveland to stabilize that as well.

What trade chips do we have realistically? 1. Cap space to take on a large contract; 2. draft picks; 3. Elvis, Tarasov and Severson. We're going to have to give more to get what we want.

This team improved defensively but there are some glaring issues that it will be interesting to see how GMDW resolves. Offensively it was pretty good.

Our goalies have to be near the top of the list for needing improvement. Elvis sv% was .892, tarasov .881, and jet. 938.

There's no way jet can sustain that and goalies are fickle but it seems the ship has sailed on the other two.

The team avg sv% was .903 (thanks to jet) which is a hair higher than league avg this year, but that really does not account for situational changes (backups vs starters, etc). We allowed 254 goals against. If all the goalies played to league avg, that would drop to 244. If we use team avg then it's 235.

That alone likely gets this team into the playoffs.

Other personnel changes are likely but this team is well positioned.

Jenner/Voronkov- Monahan - Marchy
JVR (UFA) - Fantilli - KJ
Jenner/Voronkov - Sillinger - Olivier
ZAR - Danforth - whoever

And finding a spot if Chinakov can get healthy (yes please). That's a dangerous team.

Defense is certainly messier. I'd love to get a 1RD and sign Fabbro to play with Mateychuk but that may be a luxury. If you have a LD depth chart of Werenski - Mateychuk - Provorov you don't have a shutdown but you do have options. As others have pointed out, something has to push with Severson and gudbranson but both looked improved at the end of the year. Basically, I have no idea what they'll do for our D.

It will be an interesting summer regardless, should be fun to watch (unless they don't fix the goalies lol)

PP didn't suck with Monahan in the lineup.

Oct-10 to Jan-7: 23.9%, 11th in the league
Jan-8 to Mar-23 (Monahan injured): 7.8%, 32nd in the league
Mar-24 to Apr-17: 24%, 13th in the league

After 82 games: 19.5%, 22nd in the league
Being unable to score goals in March was what really killed the season. That 2+ weeks or so where they got shut out 6 times hurt bad.

It's worth including our team save percentage in the analysis, which was .896. Up until the last streak of wins it was around .889.

We werent good enough defensively.

Bringing back Provorov with even bigger contract would be a mistake. We need to improve defensively, not keep status quo.

Fabbro is good enough to keep around. Actually quite good defensively. But we need to find "another Fabbro" or "Fabbro on steroids" if possible to fix that TOP4 defence.

Werenski-Fabbro
Mateychuk-X

What about Noah Dobson if he is available?? Would he be an upgrade and what would we trade for him. Considering he has a contract coming up??

So a lot of assets going for one guy who needs significant offensive minutes and PP time? Are we trading Werenski or Mateychuk to make space? (obviously not).

We should be targeting the best possible D who don't need offensive deployment and PP time. Pelech is my target on the Islanders. His trade cost might be quite low as well. If folks can identify an RD of that caliber (sadly Pulock is not?) that would be even better.

Pelech is a left-handed LD???

Orlov is a LD but apparently in the past he's played RD. No idea if he was good. But older so it'll be a shorter term deal which might be better. Also it was Waddell who brought him to Carolina. Perhaps he wants him in Columbus?
