How do we feel about this? With the cap going up it could be feasible but not sure it's the right time to go big game hunting in free agency for this org. And not sure if Rantanen would have any interest coming here.

9 time out of 10, I would agree with you. But it’s not every day there is a Mikko Kapanen about to hit FA, either. Sometimes you just don’t have a say in what the “right time” is. I mean, Calgary could kinda be like living in Colorado, I guess lol if he is willing to play here, $14M x 8, no prob. That deal would take him to 36, basically to the end of his career.

I think we’d have to pay him way more than he’s worth to get him here, I think he’s more of a winger than a center too. His play style also isn’t one that typically ages well

Think you’d definitely get some good years but it might get ugly on the back end. It’s a pretty hard no from me. Having cap space doesn’t mean we have to blow it all in free agency

$14M will be a lot more common on the back half of that contract than you think, for better or for worse.

Flames are projected to have $37m in cap space next season with Andersson being the only big $$ player to be signed.
Too bad Rantanen isn't a center though. Not sure if the Flames should invest the kind of money it will take to sign him... him being a 29 year old winger and all. I say wait another year. McDavid will be available in 2026.

Building around two post apex wingers on massive contracts would be dumb as hell but also entirely on brand for the Flames under this ownership. Thankfully pretty much zero chance Rantanen would ever sign here.

Seriously, just because the Flames have cap space now doesn't mean they need to blow it on ufa's. Just sign Coronato/Wolf/Zary to 8 year deals and be happy with the flexibility.

It would be a most flames like thing to do. Go after and pay a high scoring winger and ignore the fact that this team really really needs an elite centre

No to Leddy; I’d personally prefer to go sub-30 if possible. As far as guys who are UFA at the end of the season, I’d target Provorov. I saw somebody on here mention Lindgren, he’d be an interesting option. It looks like Chychrun is pretty happy in Washington. Hague’s deal is up the end of this season but won’t technically be unrestricted until the year after that, he’d be another one to consider. Besides that, there are a bunch of really intriguing RFA players, namely Lorei in Boston, Evans in SEA, and Romanov in Long Island, whose name I’ve also seen batted around here. Buffalo has a trio of guys whose salaries they could be looking to dump including LD Owen Power. Moser in Tampa could be another interesting one to consider, a year left at $3.375M then RFA.

JJ Moser would be the dream add, I was firm on Tampa winning the Sergachev trade handedly and although it’s not a commonly shared opinion I think their respective play this year has proven it true even more so than I thought. Tampa has him extremely cost controlled though, they’d never let him go.

Complaining about the thought of adding a top 10 forward/player in the league for free because he’s 28 is by far the most HFBoards I’ve ever read, so thanks for the chuckle. If Makar actually wants to come home and sign with us when his contract is up, imagine how screwed we would be if we agreed. I pray that McDavid didn’t wear Calgary Flames pajamas growing up, our organization wouldn’t be able to help themselves.
