Proposal: Arizona & Colorado

To COL:
Phil Kessel @3.4aav
Kyle Capobianco

To ARI:
Tyson Jost
Ryan Murray

Arizona has Galchenyuk and Capobianco both off the IR finally. The Yotes have tons of problems but none bigger than the fact that they just bleed goals against. They need more solid players that can play within the system, be mistake-free, and help stop the bleeding. Especially on Defense.

Ryan Murray helps in that department. And Jost, too, to some extent. Murray can be flipped at the TDL. Jost is young enough to be a longer term piece if he fits in well.

Colorado is looking for secondary scoring. Ryan Murray has recently been a healthy-scratch as the Avs have a ton of depth on D. With Murray the odd-man-out, it may make sense to move him for secondary scoring.

Phil Kessel is Mr. Secondary Scoring. It’s the bread-and-butter of his career. Capobianco makes more logical sense as a healthy scratch than does Murray.

Personally I would do it.

Would love to have Phil the Thrill running on the 2nd line with his old pal Kadri.

But I'm not sure the Avs would move Murray after signing him this summer. Would like to be wrong though.
Given that Arizona is running rookie Barrett Hayton as 1C, winger Nick Schmaltz as 2C, Johan Larsson as 3C and winger Christian Fischer as 4C, do you think there’s ANY hope at all, that Jost could MAYBE play C on a team with maybe the most horrendous C depth in the entire salary cap era (if not longer)???

I would think ARZ would prefer to replace Ryan Murray with draft picks/ overlooked specs instead of Murray who doesn’t really help ARZ with tanking and long term.

I still think that if the Avs we're going to get Kessel they would have fitted it in with the Kuemper trade...

I personally wouldn't mind Kessel at all near the deadline. But, I don't think the Avs will move Murray. Not after signing him, and not with the injuries on this defense. Girard has missed time; Makar is banged up and has missed time; Toews has missed most of the season so far and just returned; Byram is now injured; and EJ is always good for an injury. The Avs need strong #6-7 defensemen since so many guys seem to be made of glass.

I also suspect the Avs (Sakic, Bednar) like Jost too much to just dump him off. They consistently seem to see him as an adequate #3 centre.

No. A twelve win season does 100x more damage to the long-term rebuild efforts than missing out on the extra pick in the 60s 20 months from now would. Especially given you can probably flip Murray for a pick in the 90s.

Capobianco very well may be a a good 6-7d. And If not, they can aways be acquired. Murray isn’t right for that role.

You aren’t dumping off Jost. You’re getting an extraordinarily consistent offensive weapon who doesn’t need talent surrounding him to perform. His best season ever was with Hagelin and Bonino. And last year on the hapless Coyotes he was on pace for 28g per 82gp. He’s a motor that drives his own production. Set it and forget it secondary scoring. That’s not nothing. You aren’t dumping Jost. You’re upgrading him. Significantly.

That might happen regardless of Murray….. my point is he doesn’t do anything for ARZ.
I think they want some sort of quality young return for kessel. Jost is meh

Fair proposal but I wouldn’t do it as an Avs fan. Jost in a depth role is important to the Avs if they want to go far. I’d rather trade a prospect that isn’t making an impact yet. I also think there’ll be better forward options than Kessel available but if not I’d definitely make a play for him. I’d rather just not use Jost.

My feelings on Tyson Jost are that he's a replaceable 4th line centre. If anything, I'm more hesitant to give up Murray in this deal than Jost because of the Avs' blueline and their penchant for injuries (Makar, Byram, E. Johnson).

On the one hand, we can probably get more for Kessel at the TDL. On the other hand, this is a pretty solid deal. On the other other hand, the only thing I wanna do this season to improve is get a better goalie. Nothing else is going to have as much of a cost to impact ratio as good as that.

I feel bad for Jost, he was my 1st round pick in the 2016 moderator mock draft. Thought he had at least a decent shot at being a #2C.

What about Jost for Kessel at 50%? Jost can be 3C and PK 1 for Arizona. PP 2.

Avs can’t really afford to trade Jost for a winger without getting a C in return. I also doubt Sakic trades Murray since he just signed with us.

Im interested in Kessel, but not in this trade. If he can be had for Kaut/Bowers/etc. as the main piece I think it’s more realistic from the Avs perspective.

No interest is those prospects, unfortunately. Would take a 2nd, I guess.

Yes, Murray does. A rebuilding team is full of humans, not video game characters, and so even if you're losing a lot, you need to compete. Right now, the ARZ defense/goaltending is so bad, it's hard to even compete most nights. It damages players' psyches. It breeds a hapless culture. It kills a rebuild before it even starts. See Edmonton for like a dozen years. And Murray is the kind of defenseman that can help prevent that. And Jost, for all his shortcomings, is still a talented player. Not unlike Galchenyuk, TBH, who the Coyotes also have on a flyer. Jost and Murray would be a fine return for Kessel.

theoretically a pretty good deal, but as others said I dont see Sakic moving Murray and Jost. not now.

if I was Sakic though Id accept this or any other close value deal, changing Murray for some prospects or picks (though the Avs dont have many picks anymore...), etc. for a team as thin as ARZ on C, I think Jost would have the best opportunity in his life to finally blossom (or bust), playing top 6 mins and all.

I don't have a good answer as to why, I just really don't want to trade Tyson Jost. I think he's a much better player than most Avs fans do, it just doesn't translate to the scoreboard very well

Impossible trade. Murray signed with the Avs to win, you don't trade him to Arizona.

He's a regular healthy scratch, forget his feelings lol. The day we pass on a trade out of respect for a guy not even drawing into the lineup is the day I find a new team
