Are we in Canada paranoid about 2026 or should we not be worried?

I am sure this has been linked somewhere else but...

Canada’s 4 Nations roster leaked by NHL insiders

Forwards :

Sidney Crosby

Brad Marchand

Nathan MacKinnon

Connor McDavid

Brayden Point

Mitch Marner

Sam Reinhart

Mark Stone

Brandon Hagel

Sam Bennett

Anthony Cirelli

Travis Konecny

This leaves the likes of Connor Bedard, Macklin Celebrini, Nick Suzuki, Mark Scheifele, Seth Jarvis, Zach Hyman, John Tavares, Tom Wilson, Matt Duchene and Steven Stamkos off the roster.

Mine...

Hagel - McDavid* - Point *

Duchene* - MacKinnon - Reinhart

Marchand - Crosby* - Konecny

Bennett - Scheifele* - Marner / Stone

Scheifele and Duchene got snubbed - where is the 13th forward?

*********************************************************

Defense :

Cale Makar

Alex Pietrangelo

Shea Theodore

Devon Toews

Travis Sanheim

Josh Morrissey

Colton Parayko

This leaves Drew Doughty, Evan Bouchard, Noah Dobson, Morgan Rielly, Dougie Hamilton, Owen Power and MacKenzie Weegar off the roster.

My D...

Devon
Toews – Cale Makar
Shea Theodore – Alex Pietrangelo
Josh Morrissey - Colton Parayko
Drew
Doughty – Aaron Ekblad

I did not call Travis Sanheim

**************************************************************

Goaltenders :

Jordan Binnington

Adin Hill

Samuel Montembeault

Woof… not exactly a ton of depth here. Logan Thompson, Cam Talbot, Stuart Skinner, Marc Andre Fleury and Darcy Kuemper all get passed on according to Johnston.

My Goalies (no particular order)...

Sam Montembeault
Jordan Binnington
Logan Thompson

Why was Hill taken over Thompson?

Heavily rumoured Seth Jarvis is the 13th forward.

I have nothing against Jarvis, but do we have enough offensive pop if we are adding him? Who are we leaving off?
Jarvis is a young talented 200 foot player they can build around in the future. He is almost PPG so we're not losing too much. I love the pick.

Would I prefer Duchene or Scheifele in Feb 2025? Sure, but they obviously wanted someone young.

What Team Canada could look like in Feb 2028...

Celebrini (21) - Mc David (30) * - Guenther (24)

Hagel (29) - MacKinnon (33) - Bedard (22) *

McMichael (27) - Point (31) * - Johnston (24) *

Cuylle (26) - Jarvis (26) - Marner (30)
I had him as the 4th Center on my 2028 team - Hockey Canada must feel the same way.

He doesn't get a ton of minutes in Carolina so there is offensive upside to his 18GP 7G 9A .

Hockey Canada LOVES 200 foot players.

Interesting Jarvis numbers:

Over the last 3 playoffs Jarvis has the best 5v5 goal differential of any forward on the team.
So far this season, Jarvis has the highest xGF% of any player in hockey. (min 200 minutes played)

Thanks but all those "analytics" are over my head. :)

The first number tells us that in actual outcomes, Jarvis has the best % of goals scored for and against 5v5 in the playoffs.
Goals scored while on the ice: 22
Goals against while on the ice: 11

The 2nd is an advanced stat saying he is playing incredible this year (but he has gotten pretty unlucky with the stats that track that sort of thing)

I've always liked the kid. He would / will make a heck of a 4th liner - Best on Best. I just wish he was a little bigger.

They are really riding the two-way guys up front. I think it was already mentioned, but Bennett-Cirelli-Stone screams a 4th line checking unit. If I am to guess, this is how the lines might look:

Hagel-McDavid-Point
Jarvis-MacKinnon-Marner
Marchand-Crosby-Reinhart
Bennett-Cirelli-Stone
Konecny

Toews-Makar
Theodore-Pietrangelo
Morrissey-Parayko
Sanheim

Binnington
Hill
Montembault

I think we still win. That is incredibly top heavy down the middle. There are 4 or so forwards that you could say maybe could have been replaced. But let's see first. I don't get Konecny there. He is having a nice start to the year, but so? I'd have rather seen a Lafreniere/Bedard type in there. Someone being used to groom for 2026. Scheifele was tailor made for this team too. Because the size of the forwards is suspect. Not a lot of beef up front vs. the Americans. Loads of skill, so they'll ride that, but no one is even 6'4". Stone is the tallest at 6'3". I know that the likes of Bennett and such more than makes up for it with his physicality, but if this team has a knock up front it is that they lack size. Lots of guys under 6'0"

Re : "I don't get Konecny there. He is having a nice start to the year, but so? I'd have rather seen a Lafreniere/Bedard type in there. "

No me. I like him - LAF and Bedard are simply too inconsistent.

Re : "Scheifele was tailor made for this team too. Because the size of the forwards is suspect. Not a lot of beef up front vs. the Americans"

Agree. I wanted Scheifele and his size will be missed.

Re : "Loads of skill, so they'll ride that"

Yes. Posters in the Canadian Junior thread are complaining we didn't bring enough skill. Here, posters will complain we have too much. Hockey Canada can't win. :)

Canada is stacked up front. Do I wish we had more size? Yes but we have the best 3 players in the world (McDavid, MacKinnon and Makar) and all of our offensive players are on fire.

2 things...

1) A year ago, many of us were worried about the age of the Canadian team. Posters had Tavares, Stamkos and O'Reilly on the team and I was wondering how we'd keep up with the young Americans in their prime.

One year later, looking at our roster, minus Marchand and Crosby, we are young, talented and fast. Thank God for small favours. :)

2) The U.S.'s best generation since the late 90's came from the 2016 - 2019 drafts. Those players are in their prime. Coincidently, Canada <bleeped> the bed during those same drafts. Give those facts...

A) The U.S. left some serious talent at home;

B) Even with their best players from their best generation in decades, on paper, we still have the better team so, in a way, Canadians can express a sigh of relief because this could have been ugly - it looked ugly just one year ago.

C) We have some AMAZING players on the horizon. IF those players reach their potential, watch out!

Having said all that, the U.S. could certainly win. So could Finland and Sweden.
