I've seen private tracking that has Matheson top-20 D in actual puck possession time. He creates a fair amount too. He's just clearly less effective than Hutson who was top-3/5 in the league this season.

And my point is # of giveaways is a lazy and dangerous reasoning.

Everyone knows Matheson is overmatched in his minutes. That doesn't mean he's easily replaceable and getting rid of him is definitely not addition by subtraction.

Giveaway/takeaway stats are counted differently in different arenas. They are unreliable to begin with.

that’s why I’m not relying on them or anything. I said a very hyperbolic number basically just to suggest he’s a gaffe machine. The actually stats/counting are basically just a measure of how much puck possession someone has.

To give MB the benefit of the doubt, we were much better than expected in 2013. So I can understand not wanting to continue rebuilding. There was a pretty good core to build from.

But… he didn’t build on that core either. So there was no rebuild and no adding on. Just constantly looking for cheap players… and that’s how you waste HOF talent.

You don't consider his savvy work adding Parros, Murray and soon-to-be retired Briere as "building on our core"? How could he have known not one of them would play even a full season for us
