How many NHL games should be the cutoff? He has 33 games.

He turned 24 today so still at prospect age for 1 more year

I think he has to clear waivers, which to me is 1 strike against being considered a prospect, and while he only played 30-some games he basically spent the entire year in the NHL minus a couple conditioning stints.

I tend to go by calder eligibility rules for whether someone still counts as a "prospect" to me:

Eligibility: To be eligible for the Calder Memorial Trophy, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league. Beginning in 1990-91, a player must not have attained his 26th birthday by Sept. 15 of the season in which he is eligible.

Based on that, Ludwig's 33 games last season mean he's no longer eligible for the Calder, and thus, I wouldn't include him.

In terms of "major professional league", the way the Calder is awarded, that basically just means "the NHL", and I'm fine with that for this purpose.

To be fair, I thought the cut-off was 25 as well, so I'm fine with going with that as the cut-off as well.

In terms of the games played, I find it difficult to think of anyone as a "prospect" if they've played in over a third of the games in the regular season.

Really, though, any threshold is arbitrary. I'm fine with using the NHL's arbitrary metric here, because otherwise, we end up arguing every single time we do these lists about who should count or not.
