So, There's a thread on the mains about fastest players according to NHL Edge stats, lots of people complain about how slow we are. How does that line up with the stats though?

6th in Max speed (all skaters)
5th in Max speed (Forwards)
8th in 22 Mph bursts (all skaters)
2nd in 22 Mph bursts (Defense)
7th in 20 Mph bursts (all skaters)
9th in 20 Mph bursts (Forwards)
8th in 20 Mph bursts (forwards)

Norris has the 6th highest max speed among forwards and 7th overall,

Sanderson has the 7th most 22 Mph bursts among Defense

Stutzle has the 2nd most 20mph bursts overall and among forwards.
Sanderson has the most 20mph bursts overall and among Defense.

I got to admit, I did not expect these results, we don't "feel" fast most nights.

Damn, that's surprising af.

The players don't seem that fast aside form bursts of speed. It's like there's no coordination or flow when it comes to moving the puck.

puck moves faster than any player and we don't move the puck fast.

so we are a fast team that is slow. need more playmakers.

Yup. We looked fast towards the end of last year when Martin had our breakout working better. Clean zone exits (which have been our weak point for half a decade +) allows teams to skate with speed. If you have to stop to receive a pass, or don't get a crisp pass it slows everything down.

I think we need to address that. Also we'd look a lot faster if at least one more of our D could make a good first pass consistently, instead of only being able to do that when they have all the time in the world (not common at the NHL level).

Our bottom six got slower this year as well. Cousins, Amadio have been slow and not very good. Gaudette is slow as well but he's been playing very well so you take that loss of speed.

Here’s the team ranking

Top speed 83 percentile
20mph bursts 80th percentile
bursts more important

Is there a stat for average speed? I wonder where we rank there.

Maybe it's the case of our players being fast in straight ahead open ice, but not fast within the game at all times.

Think: Colin greening.

Fast in a skills comp. Would post a high top speed. Didn't really play fast hockey. Was never pushing the pace with his speed. Most of the time was probably more stationary or slow in quick movement/acceleration where it matters more than top speed.

Also think, Spezza. Super fast top speed when looping around our net. Not the fastest in start and go.

Certain players are fast we see that but overall it is not fast.

- Each line has a slow player
- Not enough puck movement from the D
- We don’t get to the middle of the ice enough
- Opposition is comfortable in their games versus Ottawa. They don’t get stressed, they can play within themselves

I'm kind of skeptical about these kinds of stats. They tell you something, but not the full story.
The stats aren’t skeptical, just a tool

They just tell you top speed
# of 20 mph bursts
# of 22 mph bursts
Distance travelled
Shot speed
Etc
Amongst other stats.

Of course we are a slow Team

Tkachuk Batherson and Giroux are all slow. Norris with the puck is slow

Our top 6 can't beat the opposition with speed on a regular bases, except Stutzle

Your 1st paragraph really caught my eye. Having to stop to receive a pass or missing a pass usually means F cheating for offense (hello Brady). The only D that seems to do crisp passing lately is Jensen. So yeah, not seeing a lot of consistent 5 man unit play anymore when exiting the zone. Just a lot of puck watching, collapsing, icing or shooting it to neutral zone or to an opposing player.

that’s exactly what coaches do, when a team gains possession in your own zone, F1 is instructed to fly the zone, to stretch out the D , open lanes for a D or F to skate it out. Create lanes for seam passes, or a pass to F1.
Also used as a line change, by deflecting a strong pass from zone.

This is a coaching strategy used in all different levels of the game. Widely used in the NHL,
On Brady’s line he is the F1 for obvious reasons, in a forecheck. F1 is usually always a winger on the line.

So no this is not Brady cheating for offense, this as per design when puck possession occurs.
Where can get in trouble is if a player coughs the puck up right after F1 leaves.

A few guys with fast feet, but a lot of guys with slow brains. Also where the want for more hockey IQ and vision comes in.

Stützle, Sanderson, Pinto, and Giroux all have excellent IQ. Jensen is a very smart player as well. Amadio and Perron for their faults are still smart players. But Hamonic and Kleven have zero IQ. Even Zub and Chabots IQ while not flaws aren't impressive. Tkachuk and Norris' IQ aren't particularly impressive either.

Maybe we are also skating fast in the stats because we don’t have the puck as much as the opposition because you don’t skate as fast with the puck on your stick, would make sense based on recent play and the eye test

lol, is this satire

This a cumulative stat kept over the year, for every second of a shift on the ice, with or without the puck. It’s the same stat used for all 700 players.

Perhaps the team is faster. What do the stats say about "stupidity" (lack of hockey sense)?

Norris has great hockey sense imo. He’s essentially always in the right position. If he could stop fumbling pucks he could do great things.

I don’t think our team lacks hockey sense as a whole tbh. They just seem to have mental lapses, I don’t think it’s an issue with how they think the game. Jacques would call it game management.
