Are the stars aligning for Stanley's return to its homeland?

Maybe it’s because I’m not Canadian I find this sentiment strange. I have a hard time seeing a Montreal fan celebrating because Toronto won the cup or vice versa. Ditto for Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and Winnipeg. In other sports if a team from my state wins the championship that isn’t my city and team I don’t care. If it’s not my team I don’t want anyone else to win. There are some teams I pull mildly for but that’s just because my stronger dislike of other teams

You nailed it. For me and, I'd guess, most of my fellow Canadians, hockey doesn't have a greater cause beyond our own team winning. The only nationalism I feel is during the Olympics or that Four Nations thing.

I feel these days that I'm rather weakly Canadian (it doesn't help that Canada's ruling government explicitly sought after a post-national state) so I can only speak for myself here: if it's neutral, I'll almost always root for the Canadian team. Every team except the Leafs. But I'm not devastated if another team wins because I'm not a fan of the other Canadian teams.

I rooted for WPG because I want their small market in that horrible city to have some joy. I rooted for OTT against TOR for obvious reasons. I've rooted for EDM before but this time I was really neutral. Hard to root for such a wasteful organization. McDavid must leave, if losing gets him to leave I'll be very happy to see them lose.

In the next round: FLA over TOR every day, VGK over EDM (though am neutral), WPG over DAL (good luck Hellebyuk!). So that's just one Canadian team I'm rooting for that's likely going to lose and the other I'm neutral about, and the third I want to see destroyed.

I agree, I find the sentiment strange too, as a Canadian.

There are some teams I like, and some teams I don't like. It's not about country. I don't like Jets - I like Oilers. Leafs? Well, even as a Habs fan, I somehow wouldn't mind it, as it would be entertaining. But it's not about country. I don't like Flames or Sens at all for example.

As for OP - yes. Oilers will win the cup. I'm expecting a Leafs/Oilers finals, but we'll see if Toronto manages that.

Now you've jinxed it. All three Canadian teams will be eliminated in Round 2 now. (Chances were they would've been, anyways, but your careless jinx sealed their fate. Congratulations.)

It’s mainly fair weather fans and just general Canadian population that care about the cup coming back to Canada. Hardcore fans of their team mostly do not give a f*** who wins if it’s isn’t their team.

It’s a media driven narrative because it gives them something to talk about and if a Canadian team did eventually win it all it would be a huge story so big ratings and good for business.

Nothing more than that.

I think sometimes people look for reasons to justify not liking a certain team or player. But it's hockey. It is for entertainment. You don't need a rational reason for liking or not liking players or teams.

I do think people should try to put their feelings aside when analyzing things if they want to be seen as credible, but that's a different matter.

As for the OP: I think there will be a very good chance a Canadian team wins the Cup this year if two of the three remaining teams manage to advance to Round Three. FLA is a big threat and being rid of that team would open the door for other teams. If EDM beats VGK, I don't see them losing to DAL or WPG. They're returning to the Cup Final.

It's a dumb sentiment, as a Leaf fan I couldn't care less about where the other Canadian team are. I look at it this way, if the Leafs were the only Canadian team left and in the finals I can guarantee almost no other teams fans are going to be cheering. So why the hell would I cheer for another team.

Also Canadian win the cup every year, the league is still 50% ish Canadians. The cup is brought to communities across the country yearly, those communities celebrate the player from that town not the team they play for. Also some team have very few Canadians, the Canucks iced a team with 0 Canadian players last year. Do we celebrate that if that team won vs an US based team filled with Canadian players?

Exactly

I don’t get these conversations about bring the cup back to Canada thing, Canadian teams likely dislike each other more then any USA teams they might dislike. For me, as a Western Canadian having any Canadian team winning the cup other than my own team would be terrible. Listening to TSN and Sportsnet talk about that team constantly for the next year would be brutal.

Olympics and Four Nations I’m 100% expressing my nationalism, cheering Canada on. But with the Stanley Cup, if it’s not my team winning I don’t care who wins it, but really don’t want any other Canadian team winning it. IMO
