I feel like this gets said every single offseason and yet there's almost always more turnover than that.

Isles and Panthers are by no means guarantees to get in again, and at some point I think people will take an honest look at Boston and Tampa's rosters and realize they're starting to look pretty ugly. Is this the year they drop off? Maybe, maybe not. But there should be more analysis than "they got in last year so they'll get in again".

At least four teams from the Metro will be better than us. That leaves either the second WC or top three in the Atlantic. Boston could fall off, Florida has massive longterm injury issues and Buffalo could trip over themselves. But since you’d have to beat out two of them, not to mention keeping Ottawa at bay; it’s highly unlikely. We’ll probably pick between 9 and 13

Unless Buffalo has some big injuries they should make it. If the surgery really did change things for Korpisalo and last year is the new norm then the Sens could do it. They could go either way. A lot would have to go right for the Wings to make it.

I don’t see how the wings make the playoffs. Toronto, tampa and Boston are clearly ahead. So they would have to beat out Florida/Buffalo/Ottawa for the 4th seed and hope they get in. Doesn’t look promising.

IF they can stay healthy, there's no reason they shouldn't be looking at least at WC2. This roster is head and shoulders better than last year.

Yeah, last year they were also supposed to be contending, but nobody could've called two of their top 6 wingers playing ~25 games combined.

Unless Buffalo has some big injuries they should make it. If the surgery really did change things for Korpisalo and last year is the new norm then the Sens could do it. They could go either way. A lot would have to go right for the Wings to make it.

I don't see why so much has to go right for the Wings specifically. Buffalo going into the season with a Comrie/Levi tandem in net seems like a massive gamble for example.

Detroit has a chance of making the playoffs next year, but the team they ice next year will probably be the worse iteration if the Seider/Raymond/Evidsson + Cossa core.

They could make the playoffs with their current team, but I think there is something special ahead. Almost New Jersey-like where they will be a good to great team with impact blue-chip prospects on ELCs still knocking at the door.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the only new team last season in the East was New Jersey.

I don’t see where the big difference is with Detroit. They weren’t that close last season. DeBrincat is very good, but I don’t think he’s that difference. He wasn’t for Ottawa. They hoped he would be. And then signings like Ghost, Fischer, Holl, Reimer, Lyon might add a little depth, but those guys don’t make the roster significantly better either. I’d question the goaltending significantly, even if the rest of the roster was there. Not sure it is. That’s why I mention Buffalo as an option. I think the rest of the roster is there. Goaltending I’m not sure, and that might be their undoing, if they miss.

I agree. Buffalo is the closest of the previous rebuilding teams. Ottawa and Detroit would then be next. I’d probably give Ottawa the advantage too. I think there’s more true top talent on that roster between the two, but I also don’t think either are making it.

I think we may also see a team like the Penguins back in it this year. So even if someone finds a way to exclude two from last year, I don’t think it’s two new teams. Buffalo if it’s a new team. Penguins if it’s an old team.
