Are the playoffs becoming too violent?

Are you saying football isn’t a violent sport?

Feel free to quote the part of the post of mine that said football isn't a violent sport.

The conversation is about how most fans love violence and more violence in the game would make it even more popular. If that were true, given how craven most sports owners are then football and other sports would be roman gladiator battles by now.

A lot of fans of sports like the actual sport part of it.

I don't think it's too violent but it has changed.

I don't know when players started complaining SO MUCH at missed penalties while still involved in a play... or raising their arms when the other team is offsides... like it's turned into soccer in a way and it's super annoying to watch.

Add to that the diving is out of control. I like to single out Carolina because I think they are (by far) the worst offender and Rod is a whiner... but it's a problem throughout the league. Dougie Hamilton even got a fine for diving this season.

So plainly, hockey is as "violent" as it always was... but somewhere along the way the players started to become bitches.

Right. And you took it to another level with cheap shots and stuff. I am talking violence in general. Football and hockey are, at their essence, violent games. That is an attraction to a lot of fans.

I have no problem with contact to the body. Injuries happen. But with all we know about concussions, I can't believe the league accepts head shots as part of the game especially in the play-offs. That is not tough. That is being stupid. How is the league better when some of your top players can't even play?

That cross check Roy laid out the other day is a two game suspension all day long. Why would it change if players aren't facing consequences. DOPS is a complete joke. The injured player should be able to replicate what happened to them on Parros and company. They defend the accuser all day long. Who is on the side of the guy who can't turn a light on for two months.

There have been dirty plays nearly every night in the playoffs. Lack of respect for opponents is astonishing and teams are trying to take out each other’s biggest stars. This is because the punishments for attempts to injure are either far too lenient or not given at all.

This issue could easily be addressed, but Bettman and Parros do nothing about it. That’s because they think violence could draw in new viewers, who now eagerly wait to see who will retaliate and how.

Apparently, the NHL wants to see star players taken out night after night. Hockey is a physical and tough sport, but there’s nothing tough about blindsiding or hitting a defenseless player from behind.

Right now we are not far from career ending injury any given night.

You must be a 15-20 year old who has no clue whatsoever about the history of the NHL. The game was much, much more violent in the past. We don't even have to go back to the '70s for proof, guys like Clark, Pronger, Stevens, etc. wouldn't last five minutes in today's NHL because they would be suspended so often.

No way.

Did we forget that the concept of forcheck was to consistently paste your dman through a wall and heed no attention to the puck?

All the energy guys turned into Jordan tootoo in the playoffs back then.

It's not comparable.

The Domi hit on Barkov was really egregious and the league was lucky it didn’t send the defending Selke winner to the ICU.

The league responded with a $5K fine, no suspension.

That tells you all you need to know.

Congrats on winning the dumbest comment of the playoffs award.

The difference between these incidents was a little bit of luck. Lemieux got suspended for 2 Finals games and everyone thought that was incredibly light in 1996. Domi got suspended for 0 second round games in 2025.

The NHL suspends the outcome and eventually we’ll have front page headlines because of it.

I didn't take it to another level so much as discuss the actual topic of the thread.
