They will lose some games this year. They were a great team last year in the regular season as well so it's hard to say they are pretenders. Are they going to lose 7 games all year? No. But they are clearly a top team.

If you say they aren't a top team because of sample size... they were 4th in the league last year. So unless you want to argue that the last 100 games are a fluke then not sure what the argument is. If you say you expect them to be worse than last year this season despite a 13-1 start.. that means you assume them to play worse than they've played for the last 2 seasons the rest of the way. That kind of assumption seems more like bias than actual reasonable analysis.

Is it possible they fall off entirely? Yes. Is it possible they never win another game? Sure. But a reasonable person looks at their last 100 reg season games where they are one of the top teams with their best span being now, making them a top team at this moment.

I'm not a jets fan, not even close to one. I too have questions about the playoffs etc but those questions change nothing about how great they've been. If they face the Nucks I hope they choke, but I would rather not face them in a series right now.

They're for real in that they're competitive every night. They have the best goalie in the world, good fwd depth and a decent defense with a true #1 in Morrissey. I think they're one major piece away from being True Contender status.
I agree, although if winning 21 of their last 22 regular season games doesn’t already make them a “true contender” I’m not sure what would. That’s the equivalent of a ~156-point season.

As an Oilers' fan, could someone in Winnipeg teach my team (which, btw, has eight or nine 30+ goal scorers on the roster) how to score some goals?

Winnipeg = 63 goals in 14 games
Edmonton = 33 goals in 14 games

Winnipeg has scored more than twice as many goals as the opposition.

They're obviously a very good (and probably underrated, coming into the season) club. They also have, I think, the best goalie in the NHL, which doesn't hurt -- although even with AHL goaltending, they'd probably be in first place with 63 goals in 14 games.

However, there's this thing with "Winnipeg" and "NHL playoff success". Those two things have historically been miles apart, never to unite.

To put this into perspective: The city of Winnipeg has had an NHL club for 30 completed seasons. In those 30 years, the two franchises have won a grand total of ONE hockey game past the second round.

So, Jets and NHL fans are probably a tad unexcited about regular season success unless they feel the club is ready to really push deep. Maybe they are, I don't know, but it's probably one of those things where fans are "cautiously optimistic".

Come on that was in 2018 which is going to be 7 seasons ago. That is an eternity in the NHL, this current Jets team is not the team that did that. It is a completely different core and coaching staff. They haven't proven anything. I'm not even talking smack this is just facts.
I see leafs fans bragging about all the cups they won 60+ years ago so I mean...

I'm making no predictions. I deal with the present, not the past, and not the future, and the FACT is that at present...right now...the Jets are the best hockey team in the league. So I'm having fun with it. Being a sports fan became a more pleasant experience when I learned to enjoy the moment. I've supported the local football team that one year won the championship with an 8-8 record, and another year lost in the championship with a 14-4 record, and I can tell you that the 14-4 team has left me with far better memories, because they gave me six months of pleasure vs. one day of pain. I'll take that, any time.

Do I want the Jets to win the Cup? Of course I do! Will they? Probably not, which is the same answer I'd give for every other team...every single one.

But the stupidest take I'm reading here (and elsewhere), again and again and again, is the one that says they'll choke in round 1 because, well, because that's what they did the past two years.

You know which other team choked in the playoffs before they won the Cup? EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF. THEM!! That's how it works...duh!

It just drives some people crazy to think that a small market, Canadian team might a) be doing well; and b) making their fans happy.

It could all end tomorrow, and I'd be disappointed, but it doesn't change the fact that for the past month, they've been the best Jets team there's every been (and I've been a fan since day one in 1972), and also the best hockey team on the planet. Right now.

The past is finished. It doesn't matter. The future hasn't arrived. No one knows. All we've got is right now, and that's a gift. That's why we call it the present.
Well said!
There is an old saying that you have to first lose in the POs to learn how to win in the POs.
Well they have lost so...

I’m certainly pleasantly surprised with how this season has unfolded so far. And was also pleased with how well they performed last regular season.

And then they did what they always do. Fold when playoff pressure arrived. They seem to be mentally flawed when meaningful pressure shows up. The AV’s made them look like an AHL team.

They are the poster child for showing how meaningless a strong regular season is. Hopefully, that changes this year, but color me very skeptical on that.

Why are you so salty? :laugh:
Go back a few pages. I only mentioned that the Avs started taking over the game in the 2nd period because a Jets fan had incorrectly said that they were the better team for the first 2 periods and a couple of their fans went apeshit because 'how dare I question the best team in hockey' and it snowballed from there.
