Are the Leafs a contender? I don't think so.
You need to exit the first round to gain some contender traction.
How do you do that before the playoffs have started?
I really don't know if I would put Dallas on there. Goaltending has been saving their asses more this season than Winnipeg. Even with Heiskanen, the Stars defence looks bad. Last season in the playoffs, the Stars had a good defence thanks to Tanev. They're a good team but they're not as good as their record indicates IMO. Helle is an amazing regular season goalie and helps to cover up for some of the team's weaknesses, but he has struggled in the post-season (not necessarily all his own doing to be fair).
In the playoffs, I still favour Colorado, Dallas and Vegas from the West at this point in time. Even the Oilers who have been mid this year can still fall back on the experience of their multiple deep runs and get superhuman performances from Drai and McDavid that can be enough to beat Winnipeg. I can see the Jets getting past one of those teams, but not two or three.
You build a history of doing something in the playoffs. Both these teams have regular season greatness and first round demise, until they do something in the playoffs I'm not sure how either can be moved into the contender category.
If Jets make 2nd, 3rd round this year.. then have another 1st,2nd,3rd,4th place in the West next year.. then I say yeah they are a contender.
