Are McDavid & Eichel off the table? (MOD: if a new expansion team starts in 2015)

So somewhat of a backstory behind the lead up the the Trade Deadline is that the Las Vegas "franchise" is working its way to a goal of 13,000 season ticket "opt-ins".

I know the NHL is extremely tight-lipped on WHEN a new team may be expected.

What happens if the plan is to expand to 32 teams this off-season.

If there are two expansion teams, doesn't that mean they automatically get 1st/2nd OA picks, i.e. McDavid/Eichel?

Is this scenario possible?

Probably requires a season notice if it was to happen. Could happen with 2016 1st 2 picks but no chance for McEichel.

I don't think there's any way two expansion teams are greenlit for next season. Maybe the one after that.

The NHL has been very tight-lipped on the subject. And it's pretty easy to add two more teams since the current conference layout is based on a 32-team model (8/8/8/8).

They could easily have it already worked out including who gets moved to the Western Conference if they're adding Quebec.

Las Cegas I think is the more real concern, Quebec seems more like a 2-3 years from now situation.

CBJ were granted an expansion team in 1998 and didn't play till 2000 I believe. So you would think the same would happen for LV and whoever.

Also,

Expansion teams do not get the top two picks automatically.

I believe they get sloted apx 5-7th on the lottery meaning they have a roughly 7% chance @ #1

Incorrect.
There will be no expansion this off season. A tabled meeting of the board of governors (I.e. The owners) is publicly announced, not secretive as you suggest here. Also, the poster who indicated 3 or more years is most likely correct. There are a ton of variables that will need to be addressed by the board before a final vote. That process is still ongoing, not enough time for this off season, there fore, this thread is a moot point.

go back through the 9 teams added since the 90's--the expansion was FORMALLY announced 18-20 months before they played and they did not draft untill they started playing--SO THERE IS ZERO CHANCE OF THIS HAPPENING

Do you really think they could ramp up these two new teams quickly enough to have them participate in the draft and start playing next fall? Seriously?

I would love to see the NHL try to have 2 new teams operational by September

Of course this would be something to happen though.

Bad luck leaf fans. Franchise finally decides to rebuild the proper way, two new teams come in and get the elite talent automatically and leafs get the later picks.

•They already said they won't expand for next year

•It's obviously too late now anyway

•that's not how the picks work for expansion teams
