Player Discussion Arber Xhekaj the Sheriff Returns Edition

Doubt it. MSL is unlikely to change the lineup considering the win.
Mikkola is a 6'6" and 210 pound aggressive goon that NOBODY other then X or Anderson can take care off. Anderson is hurt so now what?

How's Hutson fighting?

This is where everybody in the LEAGUE knows that X will take anyone on or retaliate. So they worry and think twice about taking any liberties. In fact, I criticized him for saying it out loud, but the message is blunt and effective.

I absolutely do not want to hear Marty's word salad if one of our guys gets hurt. It's ALL on him...and he has the solution in his hands.

Xhekaj with Savard seems like a bad match
I was hoping that X would learn from Savards very conservative and defensive style, but, well, NOPE.

Honestly, I don't understand some of these young guys. Part of learning is to absorb how more successful players are playing the game, but they seem to be self absorbed and sometimes locked into the image of their mirrors. Whatever style of play/thinking they had that brought them into the league is now "part of their success" where in fact, it's self limitation.

I can't understand or relate how some of them think...or NOT think...

Sure they do… under HuGo & MSL the identity will never be rock’em sock’em, it’ll be attack based skill + hockey IQ
I remember Gorton saying few times that we need more toughness. That is a pattern of cup winners like Vegas, Panthers even Tampa before. If MSL cannot understand and adjust, he will not suceed.

We need a tough guy like Corey Perry in Edmonton. Savard will retire this summer, that will open a spot for X.

The “St.Louis hates Arber Xhakaj and Kent Hughes is shopping” nonsense is starting up again, isn’t it?
I'm old enough to remember Ferguson and remember that Pollock, THE Sam Pollock, the greatest hockey GM ever, he would rather take out his eyeballs with a spoon then trade Ferguson. IN FACT, he begged him to come back after Fergy retired.

The usual argument is that "it's a different era" but reality is that hockey is still played by aggressive man at a high pace and physical. Including hurting each other. Despite "some" fans having the need to see man dressed in tutu's, aggressiveness and fighting is in the DNA of hockey. PERIOD.

X is the first Fergy level deterrence we had in 60 years. Yes, we had tough guys, but NOTHING like Fergy and now X.

X stays...deal with it.

Yeah I'm certainly not suggesting they should trade him, so not sure if you maybe misunderstood something.

Just having a dig at folks who think the organization has it in for him, whenever they scratch him after he plays like shit.

I knew we were on the same page. I mentioned our comments about X who my dad loves as well and sure enough Ferguson is the name that came up. Seems like some of us “se souviens”.

Have you thought maybe he doesn’t know how he should play given the length of the leash and level of confidence MSL has shown in him? Also if playing like shit earns you a spot sitting out then make room because he should have alot of company on any given night.

No, because he went through a long stretch of this season where he was playing within himself and he wasn't taken out of the lineup.

Recently he's been trash, and before you tell me Player X has also been trash, fair or not fair, Xhekaj hasn't earned enough clout to be exempt from being sat.

Right now Struble is just better, in 1 week from now Struble might be struggling and Xhekaj can step back in.

Its really not that deep.

Arber is not going to be traded. He needs to sit once in a while to understand his limitations. Don’t forget that this guy doesn’t have a vast hockey pedigree. Unlike his younger brother, he did not learn much about playing pro hockey, as he came directly as an older major junior to the NHL nearly directly.

Coaching staff is there to show him the timing of playing his brand of hockey. Those who think MSL hates him have no clue. One of MLS’ closest buddies in the days was André Roy. Marty understands hockey needs to have those types of players. But I think this coaching staff sees Arber becoming more than an enforcer. And when Arber forgets to keep it simple, he looks foolish at the worst time.

He’s 24 going on 21, essentially. Hockey wise.

Let’s be patient with our lads.

Hughes is not Sam Pollock.

Guhle-Hutson
Matheson-Carrier
Struble-Reinbacher
Thanks for this.

You see, this is where we disagree. Struble is solid and will be a tradeable asset. I don’t see him as a long term solution. I see Arber because in the playoffs, the Sherwood shots become legal. And Arber is the king of Sherwood.

At least we get the discussion going.

Intimidation is part of the game. In his memoirs, Jean Beliveau talked about the difference Fergy made for him on the ice. Greatest GM for me is Franke Selke who hired and trained Pollock.

I'd have a lot of patience with Arber, he'll need to find that sweet spot though of controlled aggression within his role.
