Since there's never been one, I think 80 is a fitting number for a goalie.

Are you allowed 3 digits? 212, BP of water 451 paper burning . F of course. In a 1000 years, they wil have to, cause 1 thru 99 will be in the rafters for most teams…..

No. The NHL Rule Book mentions what can not be used and triple digits is among the banished (decimals, fractions, and oddly 00).

Does it really matter? Anything but 1, 31 or 79, obviously.

Think there was Joel Otto as the last to wear 00 because his name was "ought - Oh" 00.

EDIT: I'm super wrong. I thought I read something somewhere. XD oopsie.

My archaic tech knowledge comes in handy once every few years here. 00 is a technical limitation of the method they use to catalog jersey numbers. Easily solvable, but not worth the money to fix to them sadly. I love a 00. Except in roulette. The house already has a big enough advantage.

I remember when John Davidson wore 00 for the Rangers late 70s or so. The rule was likely modified at some point.

Though it is an exhibition, the author George Plimpton wore 00 for the Bruins (at the Spectrum) when he donned goalie gear to pen a first-hand account of playing in an NHL game.
